Great idea. Simple and will tell where the problem is located. Put a cross on the base of the round so you can tell the orientation of the marks

well i spent another 2 hourd cleaning and checked the headspace with some OKIE guages. The headspace is perfect, but it still is very hard to close with a round....the chamber is nice and clean, the extracter is polished to a mirror....
still won't close with out a slap
is it possible the spring in the bolt is too strong?

does anyone have a gunsmith i can send this to? someone that knows mosins and can smooth it out?

I have had the rifle a few months...AIM likely won't help me. I did what you suggested and used a sharpie to color 2 rounds, they came out looking great, just a little color removed from the extracter, the case had no marks or scratching

Did you check it with the GO headspace gauge? It is rare, but it can happen that there is too much headspace, one reason why I got the full set of gauges for some rifles. If you don't have a Go gauge click on the OKIE banner at the top of the page, the gauges are very easy to use.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I'll bet IO finds a case head stuck in there from a case separation. I have dealt with them before (not just with Mosins ) , and they can be frustrating until you figure that out.

I'm betting with you too! I also will repeat I don't think steam cleaning is strong enough to show up a case neck or loosen the crap that might be holding it in place either. Matter of fact it might bake what is in there even harder. I go for the shotgun brush on a rod in a drill and solvent of your choice and of course the action out of the wood. Heat and solvents (that don't catch fire) are the way to go to my thinking and experience. I also remove every extractor on every bolt head of every rifle because I know for a fact solvents and 160 pound compressed air will not clean that channel without removal of the extractor.

Am I getting something right here or am I confused. You bought the rifle from AIM and they won't take it back but IO is going to warrent it for you? If so that is impressive customer service or really non-customer service for sure! Dang if that doesn't make me think I ought to stop bad mouthing them for sure! Bill

yea..AIM said basically that it isn't their problem, they warranty the rifles for 30 days, but they did say that if IO didn't help, that i should call them back. I suspect they would have helped me. No big deal. i like AIM, they are still cool in my book. I am glad that IO took the rifle in without so much as a whimper. I just hope they can fix or replace it with a similar matching pu.
I checked it for a broken neck, it does not have a catridge case in it. the groove that the extractor rides in at the breech face is not clocked like the ones in my other mosins...so the barrel is out of time i bet. We will see, but either way, i am hopeful it will be fixed
