Well, I have slings. Ammo is in accelerated scrounge mode. Will order more mags soon as well as some spare parts, etc.. Need a few odd and end tools as well, but the budget at the moment is beyond fried! :big shock: I have enough ammo to play with at the moment, but more will be coming when the missus ain't looking :o ! I got to get some rest as well from the monumental ebay and G.B. selling, keeping up with questions, boxing up and shipping everything, then letting'em know it shipped...............it was like working two jobs over the last month. Selling on ebay reaffirms my gut instincts that many people are mildly stupid, but don't know that they are.

JCG, it basically takes an inheritance to afford one and all the trinkets that go with it! :beek: I did however just trade 100rds of 45ACP for 180 rounds of Australian surplus 7.62x51 ammo (on stripper clips!) with a co worker this afternoon. I am down to bartering now just to go shoot it!!

Also spent the remaining cash on a CMI 20rd magazine and some nam era items I stumbled on this morning. Waiting on payday now to bulk up more items.

Well looks like I just got bit by the .308/7.62x51 bug. Might have to start looking around for one of these now to accompany my L1A1!

That is a great looking rifle. It's always nice to get a rifle that just works how it looks.

That Aussie stuff is nice ammo, I have 1000 rounds of it hoarded away in the .30 cans, 200 rounds each on the clip in heavy green bandoleers with snap closure pockets. The Portuguese stuff is also good, and the Venezuelan stuff if you can find it. I bought that stuff on the cheap and discovered once I opened it that it was made in Yugoslavia by what is now Privi. They I had Indian, South African, Indonesian, German, US, British, and a few other kinds, all of it shot fine.

Most of the stuff I have is more current, Winchester, Federal Lake City, German MEN and DAG, Silver State Armory, Freedom Munitions, but I have some stuff my uncle gave me with the Garand (rechambered in 7.62x51NATO) that's made in Argentina. It's NATO headstamped and I have no idea when it was made. I've never seen it anywhere for sale or even mentioned.

Can you post a pic of the headstamp? Argentina used alot of it and probably still does.

I got another 140rds Australian AFN 86 today at a local pawn shop, and they may get more. I hope cause the price was nice!

Here ya go Rob. It's copper washed steel case, steel or bi-metal jacketed FMJ 7.62x51 with no NATO cross on the headstamp. I suspect because my uncle gave it to me with the rifle it's been shoot out of it but this ammo is now retired and relegated to collector status. That Garand will never see this stuff again.

Thanks Mike, apparently a little net search reveals that it is some good ammo. Non corrosive, berdan primed, FMJBT. The most recent stuff came in dated 2006 but appears to have dried up now. FM is Fabrica Militar (Argentinas version of Springfield Armory) located in the city Fray Luis Beltran, hence FM FLB. They also made Browning High Power copies and FAL copies on contact from FN HERSTAL, just to name a couple of there other items. Scary what you can find out from Jane's Defence! So I expanded my knowledge tonight, and for that I thank You!!

Really? I would have thought because it's steel cased it's not really that great. There ya go! I learned something tonight too. Well it's 1992 production and really not collectable at this point but it's still going to be display ammo only if for no other reason that it's not available. If I remember correctly I have 2/20rd unopened boxes and 5 or 6 enblocs loaded with it.

I bought that Australian stuff at least 12 years ago, I don't think it's been imported since, get what you can of it, because the supply is limited. The pawn shop probably is buying it off some guy who stashed it like I did years ago and now needs money.

Mike, copper washed steel case should pose no problem as long as you are using USGI extractors. There are some brass only snobs, but I think most guys like that get that way from using the laquer cased stuff, which can get gummie, or were using firearms with less then milsurp quality extractors. I'll stop now so as not to create alot of issues should a brass only guy stroll into this thread.

Jim, I think its as you say, there is more to be had there coming, and hes gonna split it between me and my co worker whom I traded with for the first batch, when it gets brought in to the shop.

What a great rifle with a wonderful story behind it. I had to read that write up a couple of times to really appreciate what you have invested in this build. This one sounds like a true labor of love. Welcome back to the USGI game!

Yeah Rob I'm with you. I'm not a brass only guy for sure. I have tens of thousands of rounds of steel cased ammo of all kinds around here. I don't need to shoot this stuff is more to the point. It's worth more as a curiosity then anything else. I've been through the brass versus steel debate on many boards. It's usually black rifle and modern pistol guys arguing with guys about wear on chambers and extractors. Most guys point out they've shot in the 10K+ rounds numbers with no problems. Now as for me I don't plan on shooting anywhere near that with this rifle but I have way more German Men and Dag that I need to use up. Some is that stuff with the corrosion on the cases and I really want to use it up. Last shoot Fred_G and I opened box after box that had many rounds I'll have to clean the crude off of before I can use them. It's mostly surface corrosion. Once I clean that off they work great.

Then I have maybe 4 or 5K of Winchester and Fed LC on top of the 2K of German. I'll be busy for a while going through all of that. Then finally I have 1K of Tula .308. I have to much ammo. Is that possible? Well maybe not. :D

Mike, I tend to keep my mouth shut on the brass vs. steel debates, be it here or at work! The only steel case I ever had issues with was wolf in .30 carbine. And it was laquered. After thousands of rounds of 7.62x54R copper washed steel case through many 91/30's, I just do not see the problems. I think a chamber would suffer from throat errosion issues long before a steel case did any damage, provided the cases are clean.
And I think I will conceivably wear out the barrel / throat on this M14 in time. My focuses on shooting are changing, and this was the result.

Ban-one - thank you for the compliment! Its good to be back into the USGI world, even if its a little pseudo-USGI! Its still an M14 to me!

The only other option is to spend a fortune for one of the few registered USGI select fire M14's and then pay the fees, and put up with the BATFE licensing process. That takes the fun out of it, better what you have who needs to spray and pray with an M14 anyway, or can afford to at today's ammo prices anyway.

While on vacation I put a good 300 rounds through her. Suffice to say she is pleasently accurate. The batteries died on me on the camera so no pics. But let me say that I will post some other range trips soon, or you will not believe me. I had both my elder boys breaking clay pigeons set out at 180 to 210 yards. Too hard to see any farther out. They did not believe me at first that it could be done, until I popped 8 out of 10, then they had to try it and I think surprised themselves! :D She ran with out flaw and even when hot, zero never changed. She was built well. I am going to need alot more ammunition!
