The brass stacker would require a long eye relief scope. They can be had relatively cheap if this is something you want to do. I don't have any issues with modifications that are not permanent. To tell you the truth though, I kind of question how stable these mounts really are. I recently ordered one of these https://anacortesprototypes.com/product ... m44and-m53 just to play around with. This, non permanent, modification makes more sense to me in that it compensates for the short front sight and has windage options and doesn't add any weight. You should get the front sight correctly positioned before you do this though. Elby (used to be a sponsor but don't see his ad anymore) makes a good sight tool for the Mosin.
And, don't forget, that anything you drop on top of the rifle will increase the the weight of an, already, fairly heavy gun. Then there is the question to shoot with bayonet extended or retracted. Only testing can determine this.
Also, I can think of a lot of other guns that would be better suited as a SHTF gun. A hard kicking and heavier "scout" setup with scope or red dot, tactically, would not be my first choice. An SKS might be my first choice if I discounted, entirely, an M-4 type of rifle. But, when loaded up with add-on's the SKS's get pretty heavy too. I guess it depends on what your definition of a SHTF gun's requirements would be.
I am not a hunter. My eyes are not what they used to be (crap, they've always been bad). But, I'd have to think long and hard in attempting a shot at 100 yards to make a clean kill even with a scope. And sighting in a scope is not exactly a walk in the park. Around here with all the woods, such a shot wouldn't be too practical anyway. So, what I'm saying is that with proper sight setup at 50-75 yards, the Mosins with iron sights can be very accurate and effective.
There is also the idea of reloading for this cartridge. In this way, you can develop a round that you won't have "recoil flinch" and, at the same time, is very effective out to 100 yards - maybe further. I just haven't tested longer shots because my range is only limited to 100 yards. The Yugo 8mm bolt guns respond very well at 100 yards too. Scary well with iron sights and the right ammo. Ironically, my most accurate Mosin carbine is a mid forties 91/59 that shoots POA-POI.
Good luck.
