Perfect truck gun if it shoots well! Was an M44 once and when the front sight was removed to take the band for the bayonet off the barrel an oddball front sight was installed. Rear sight was added to maybe make up for the fact it was once removed to add a now gone scope and replaced with the current one. It was painted or coated with maybe paint at one time and improved by a former owner. I would say a restored parts gun at best but if it shoots who cares what it might have been, it is what it is! No logical way to make the sows ear into a silk purse no matter what one does and I have had and enjoyed many of such guns! Get her cleaned up and checked out and off to the range with her to give her a good life and enjoy her! Oh you still need an M38 cause I don't think you have one there. Congrats and enjoy her! I do not have a M38 either, I thought I had found one at a pawn shop a couple of years ago but it was
just an old 91\59 on a hex reciever. I've yet to run up on a M38 since this madness started a little over
four years ago. BTW.... the 91\59 did go home with me that day and it is the only one I've run up on
in the wild.

That stock isn't normal. It's shorter and the front sling slot is too far back. I wouldn't do anything to that gun until you find out more about it. This is some sort of oddball for sure.

I think you are right, looks like the front sling slot is almost touching the rear barrel band spring. Picture is a little dark to be sure but the sling slot location is weird that is for sure.

Yeah, probably a M91/30 stock cut down at the muzzle end to make it match a M38 stock. Then the sling slot moved back. None of the M38, M44, M91-38, or M91-59 stocks have the slot that far back. Has to be made form a M91/30 stock with the original sling slot cut off and a new one added too far back????

More "parts".

I'm going to guess a 44 or 45 dated receiver. The receiver isn't rough like a 43 and it also has a non stepped tang so it's definitely 40s dated.
