Here's a picture of the cartridges I shoot in my M1881 model. I am out of the paper patch bullets and looking for them again that cartridge is last one I have loaded with a paper patch. The grease groove bullets I cast myself, three are 42mm cases and the one is a 38mm case. The chamber in the rifle is quite generous in the neck and the 42mm case is no problem. Cases were made from 348 Winchester cases and I had to turn the area in front of the rim down about .010" to get them to fit.

That bayonet reminds me of the one in my Martini Henry. In it, you rotate that collar so the bayonet mount point (sight/whatever) can go past the collar and then you rotate it back, capturing it. See "Fixing Your Martini-Enfield Socket Bayonet" under http://www.martinihenry.com/bayonets.htm for pretty pictures of what I am trying to say.

Nice rifle. The Swiss, in the 1800's were the "Honey Badgers" of military rifle development- they didn't give a F__k what other nations were doing.... They stuck to their own R&D, and came up with so many beautiful, but doomed to failure designs...love 'em anyway...

There's a Swiss Waffenbrik M78 that's been sitting at a local gun shop for over 6 months now priced for $449. I thought about getting it but didn't think I could find ammo for it.

You will not find ammo for it, the last production was by Remington, they stopped making it in 1940. .41 Swiss rimfire.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I am finding ammo here and there. But most are collectable, and probably not shootable.Junk Yard Dog wrote:You will not find ammo for it, the last production was by Remington, they stopped making it in 1940. .41 Swiss rimfire.
Someone told me new productions was made not long ago910-15 years ago) in Italy. They used copper cases. He said they were not popular because they were not collectable. And the people who did buy it shot it up. I need to look for this ammo, and see if anyone stock piled some away. I am determined to shoot mine at least once. It may end up costing me 9 dollars a round to try. But so be it. That is the way I am wired.
