Re: Quick modern rifle question...
The bipod will be a waste of money, the 30 round mag will make this hard to shoot prone and the bipod is useless in any other position, also weighs down the front of the rifle when you are shooting in the standing position.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: Quick modern rifle question...
That's not for the twist. Should be on the barrel. Usually 1x9 or 1x7 I think but Olympic has some other rates. 556 can have either.MN Fan wrote:Thanks Buckeye. Yeah, I was afraid if I waited too long, it would be gone. The only mark on the barrel is "556", which means it is a 1X9 twist. I haven't disassembled it yet to see if there are other markings...but I am pretty sure its their basic bore.
I will most likely scope it since I can't see worth crap. I will also probably get a bipod for it since I can't hold a rifle steady lol. Actually, I think these style of rifles look good with a bipod. But I don't have a need for lights, lasers, etc. Wait, what if the zombies attack at night? Well, maybe a couple of lights and lasers![]()
I'll also get another mag. After that, we'll see. I doubt it gets too ninja-ish. Maybe a bayonet
Thanks again!

I agree. You don't need mall ninja stuff. A light and good optics and you are good to go with what it was designed for. Not that you need it... but it ain't a MosinJunk Yard Dog wrote:Extra mags are OK, mall ninja attachments all over the weapon are notAs for the Zombies......Millman has a video someplace

Is it correct that the more the twist, the better it handles heavier bullets???

Sorry, I was typing fast
I meant...it only has 556 and no other numbers. If it had other than 1X9, it would say 556 1x12 for example. There may be something on the barrel under the handguard, but I doubt it. I am pretty sure its the everyday factory rifle. I like it, love it and am anxious to go shoot it. Its nice having the great guys and gals of this forum to run to quickly to get some help when you need to. This all came up early on a Sunday morning and I had my answers and was on my way shortly after noon.
Thanks guys

So you're saying I should take the cargo pants and jump boots back to Cabela's?pacanis wrote:You've heard, Build it and they will come? Well, build it and they will stay away
No, it won't be ninja'd up. The AR has a classic look and all those lights and wires would clutter it up. Its gonna cost me a future Mosin just to get a spam can which doesn't make me happy lol.
One quick question...are those star shaped cleaning pads a must? I sure don't mind spending cash on maintenance and cleaning supplies if they're needed. I saw some tonight and about picked a pack up, but thought I would read up on them first.

Just the opposite. The AR enthusiasts prefer a 1:7 twist, which usually isn't found unless you special order the barrel or carbine. They also prefer heavier bullets. 62 or 75 gr... something like that.Rongoman wrote:Is it correct that the more the twist, the better it handles heavier bullets???

Re: Quick modern rifle question...
thank you for the correction. I'm slowly getting to the point of thinking strongly on getting one myself. Still kind of a NOOB when it comes to the AR & just trying to learn a bit at a time.pacanis wrote:Just the opposite. My mind is trying to keep a bare bones cheat sheet of collectible rifle info in it and it doesn't even touch one thread of info on what AR to getRongoman wrote:thank you for the correction. +1. The 62 grains are the ones used now by the military. They dropped the 55's a while back.pacanis wrote:Just the opposite. Yes Ron. The more the twist the better it will stabilize the heavier bullets. 1:7 is more twist than 1:9 or 1:12. The bullet will make one revolution per 7 inches of barrel VS. the 1 revolution in 9 or 12 inches of the others. My FN barrel is a 1:7 and it doesn't like the 55 gr bullets too well.BuckeyeSgt wrote:+1. The 62 grains are the ones used now by the military. Re: Quick modern rifle question...
The ammo that came with it seems decent, but from what you're all saying, its not what I would want to buy again. This is PMC Bronze FMJ-BT 55Gr.
I'll shoot it of course to get a feel for the rifle, but I'll step up bullet weight when I order. Thanks for the info

Re: Quick modern rifle question...
Did we ever decide what your twist rate was? The 55gr. might be what you want. The way to tell is to make a mark on a cleaning rod and run it through your barrel. Put a tape or yardstick next to the rod, and count the inches it takes for the mark to make 1 full revolution.MN Fan wrote:The ammo that came with it seems decent, but from what you're all saying, its not what I would want to buy again. Re: Quick modern rifle question...
Not so fast there MN. You probably do have the 1x9 and the 55s you have will be fine. You could even go 62 but not past that. if you are lucky it will be a 1x7. You will just have to find the mark on the barrel. Olympic website has all that info.
