Cleaning after Firing Corrosive Ammo
Re: Cleaning after Firing Corrosive Ammo
you know JYD, some 20 year old single malt will add something and get you to the point that you don't care about the smell.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Re: Cleaning after Firing Corrosive Ammo
The point being that windex stinks like cat piss and I can't imagine anyone wanting to expose themselves to that smell in or out of the house. If you could smell the stink I smell right now and have been for the last 4 hours you would understand clearly why I hate that smell worse than an open sewer. I have a thing about that stink, I will not even keep a bottle of it in the house, I clean the windows with soap and water. Somebody mentioned "windex" , windex=ammonia, ammonia=cat piss, cat piss stink=me climbing the walls, and hunting the Tom cat with a rusty gelding knife.paul6892 wrote:Junk Yard Dog wrote:Why would you put cat urine extract down the bore of your Mosin? I say this as I sit here in the shop office were Bucky the shop tomcat sneaked in last night and sprayed all the corners. I am chugging on a cigar in order to not smell that f***in horrible ammonia smell. Cat piss, the smell of the spray paint can that burst in the next room yesterday, and La Gloria Cubana, it's some stink in here.
I'm sorry but what's your point ?

Not the bolt. That needs to come apart and be cleaned. The extractor does not need to be taken out of the bolt head every time, if ever.troyhillsteve wrote:Very informative, gentlemen, thank you. I hadn't known that about not taking apart the bolt repeatedly. You guys saved me some trouble down the line.

Hello again Gents !
Let’s try this again; The Point of my Point in the original post was to Point out that Corrosive Ammo, as we all
Know needs to be removed from your Firearm after it has discharged a number of rounds out the bore.
I was not trying to imply that the extractor needed to be removed from the head of the bolt every time
the Firearm is post fire cleaned.
We all know the corrosive ammo leaves a primer and propellant residue
in, on and under all components of the Firearm loading, firing and ejection system.
I agree with Jim there is nothing worse than the smell of Cat Piss !
Cats with no Balls are not good mousers
I understand that cleaning the bolt components does not require that the extractor needs to be removed
and water and Hoppe's # 9 will clean it and remove the salts in the corrosive ammo and Windex is not necessary
But, I use it anyway in a well-ventilated room or outside (Jim don't go outside, it's to cold where you live !) .
I see where this posting has gone, so maybe I should have asked; is it necessary to remove the extractor from the head ?
It looks the consensus of the Forum is NO, Just clean the head and don't remove the extractor.....
Now for the final questions gentlemen; will Not removing the extractor and Not performing a detailed cleaning
After X number of rounds have been fired; would or could this effect the performance of the extractor operation
Lastly, what is X

I agree with paul's point that the whole bolt should be cleaned. I just took exception to what I thought was his assertion that the extractor needed to be removed every time. I must have misunderstood him. Now as to what X rounds is, I would not mess with an extractor that was working properly no matter how many rounds I had fired. Don't fix what is not broken.

No, Soldiers in the field were not provided with tools to remove the extractor, that was a job for the unit armorer.

I take the extractor off the rifle when I originally get the rifle in my hands but never again unless I have a problem with it. I also use windex and no water and have for many years with no troubles at all. Windex smells remarkably clean to me and doesn't streak windows either and you can clean them in the direct sunlight too. Soap is what I use when I shower, about once a month or high tide which ever comes first for us hillbillies! Bill

I'm sending that f***in cat down to you Bill, after he sprays every last item in the house we will see how much you like that smell
I just lit up the stub of yesterdays cigar to combat the lingering traces of his spray that remain in this office.

Re: Cleaning after Firing Corrosive Ammo
I hate to say this Jim,
But cutting the balls off a adult male cat usually won't stop them from spraying. You have to do it when they are young. Before they start spraying.
Some times it will work with older cats, but most of the time it won't.
If you do it yourself, they will probably die of an infection or bleed to death .... problem solved and you get some satisfaction!
There is some "sprays" that work OK to remove that smell. Not perfectly though.
Good luck!

Oh, Bill (Zeebill), thanks for "Nothing" !

Re: Cleaning after Firing Corrosive Ammo
Oh yea, A friend of mine had a stray Tom outside his house that wanted to join the crew inside, another buddy of ours offered to foot the bill for the "work" The bill was $450 because shots were also needed, plus they don't work cheap, the cat was inside two weeks and pissed every corner of the house. Then it escaped and vanished never to be seen again. I can splash some Jack onto the blade to cut down on infection
maybe in his food also... We need to get him fixed anyway, the entire neighborhood is now populated with gray and white cats, most of them ferals, and all of them hellraisers. Problem is that he is unmanageable , if someone besides the Old Man or I touch him they will pull back a stump.

I like how the sunlight looks coming through the bottles setting on the windowsill, like a stained glass window on the cheap.
Even the vodka bottle is blue. Even the Glenlivet 40 is a nice color, you wouldn't think so with 40 year old whiskey, but I guess it doesn't turn, you think they could have at least given me something fresh, but I guess the older it is the cheaper it is. I used the last bottle for cleaning parts when I ran out of No2 heating oil.
