I am OK with the purist thing, that word is a positive thing, call me an asshole and then the fight gets started, because asshole is kinda negative.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

That m44 looks way too clean, no shellac smeared on the metal parts, no black paint on the wood around the butt.

What is the barrel/rifling like?

The bore is likely very clean, the Molots are not refurbished in exactly the same way the Ukrainian hoard rifles were. One of the still unknown things about their past.

Jim the Molot controversy started last July with the first influx of PU snipers that AIM sold and shortly afterwards Classic Arms. They both had PU snipers that were imported by InterOrdnance. The M44s and M38s came earlier this year and now the M91/30s. The purists thing only bothers me when it's used derogatorily which it is most times in reference to collectors that care about a rifles military history. Even the refurbs have military history even if they weren't used in battle after they were assembled. I have mostly refurbs and to me though they weren't used in battle they way they are I love them for the connection to the Russian military they do have. I don't think anyone thinks you meant anything bad.

Some older collectors got upset about the Molots, myself included, not because of what they are or might be, but because some people with vested interests in their sale were pushing them as pure as the driven snow without the usual years of study collectors live for. Questions were being asked and the questioners ridiculed for not just accepting the party line. I could care less what happens elsewhere, but here questions are asked about the background of these rifles and while there may be no answers as yet, at least nobody will be bashed for asking them. Collectors live to solve milsurp mysteries, and in time this one will be solved also, might take 10 years, might take 40.

Part of me is thrilled someone found a loophole to import Milsurps from Russia. The fault lies directly with our laws barring direct importation of military surplus arms from Russia. If this weren't in place we wouldn't be discussing these Molot imports.

I am all for asking questions and peicing together the history on milsurp rifles. In the case of the Molots, I think some of us here are ready to throw the Molots out with the bath water so to speak. Each rifle needs to be checked out on its own merits. Personally I like the refurb rifles, Ukraine, combloc or Molot. I have seen nothing yet put forward that indicates the Molot M38, M44, 91/30PU or the recent 91/30 imports are sporting new made parts. As for who and when they were refurbed, how and where they were stored, well those answers have not come forward yet. Whatever Molot has to refer to them as to work around export / import restrictions is fine by me as well, I'd rather some sort of milsurp was coming in as a "hunting rifle" rather then not have any coming in at all. In the end it all boils down to what your willing to spend your own personal hard earned dollars on that makes YOU happy. Trust me I have one Molot that does. There may be others in the future. I will look at them each as individuals and pick out Mosins that suit me. Nor will you catch me here degrading someone for buying a Molot. I would hate to drive off a future collector when the truth is, none of us has a solid answer on the Molot backstory good or bad. We can just appraise them against past imports on a case by case basis, and so far some seem to be in fantastic shape, and some less so. Speaks to me of multiple storage units being tapped that maintained diffrent storage and possible refurbishment standards. If I had to guess there may be a bit of diffrence in how stored weapons were kept and treated from facility to facility, such as close to Moscow, Kiev, etc. would have more inspections vs. say a storage depot in northern rural Siberia. Where they may have less attention to what the storage conditions are. Just a thought.

Some of the new molot imports are interesting for sure. When I get home later I'll post the photo a friend sent me. Its a 32/48/50/52 quad date Tula MO red letter /25\ molot refurb. I'd have scarfed it up if I saw it.

I am thinking that some of these rifles might be from police arsenals.

   And I thought I would never see the day when the Mosin collecting community would divide itself over the import of more Mosins. Mystery background or not! :beek:

Jim, I could very well believe that as well. Makes sense. I would venture to add that some may also be coming from training organizations. The current crop of 91/30's being fairly rough over all could have been from something like the Komsomol.
