Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
If you want to stay milsurp you will be looking at a SVT40, however most of them seem to sell in the grand price range these days, that's not too far off from a M14 ( M1A) You could try for a commercial Dragunov, but I have heard both good and bad things about them. They are also expensive. I don't think much of the SVT as a battle rifle, for a semi I would pick the AK47, they can be had much cheaper and the ammo is available in bulk. The M14 would be my first pick of course, followed by the M1 Garand for a semi auto battle rifle.

Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
Yea. thanks. I had a m14 (M1A) and lots of "free" ammo once but it ain't free anymore. Looks like I may have to stay with AK47. I notice you did not mention CETME or FAL or the other related semi-auto's. Thanks for your help I have not seen a good M-1 in my price range yet. But like you said "shit happens" maybe that lucky deal will show up. I have some lawyers that handle lots of estate sales on my client list. ( I fix their hobby cars) they tell me an estate sale is a good place to look if you can find them in time ahead of the vultures. JGC

Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
The FAl is a great rifle, but also expensive and the ammo is expensive, not sure about the CETME, but probably the same.

Thanks for the info. I see you have Garands in your collection and you have done much research so which of the many years and mfgs. would you pick if you had just enough $$ to buy one.Or better yet, which would you avoid. Can I get one with a C&R FFL3 ?

Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
There are four Garand manufacturers, Springfield Armory, Winchester, H&R, and IHC ( International Harvester Corp) IHC is the lowest production, followed by H&R, these are 50's produced Garands. Winchester has the name value of course, and the most common would be the Springfield. All Garands are expensive now, the real USGI ones anyway, the CMP is your best bet price wise, they will be under a grand, check their web site. All four manufacturers are the exact same rifle except for the markings, they will all have mixed parts, probably later date barrels as Uncle rebuilds it's weapons every few years. You can get one with a C&R, and if I was going to get one today I would head for the CMP. There are other factors of course, wear being one of them, but at least the CMP checks the rifles and can let you know what you are getting.

Ordered a Hex Tula Mosin from Classic Arms this morning, total was $114.99 plus whatever shipping would be.
About a hour later I got a email saying they are out of stock. Damn it. I am just going to have to keep looking for a hex.

I would think you are lucky then. Make sure they cancelled the order and do not charge your credit card anyway. Try Aim or centerfire systems or sovereign arms. Maybe Buds. A few others.

Next election may also put an end to having any choice at allI have many MN carbines and rifles so I would like a semi-auto to use as a squad type assault weapon .I do have AK47's but I want bigger bang.7'62x54R would make my ammo inventory cheaper than NATO weapons since I already have much 7,62x54R AMMO Unfortunately I can't afford an M14, my 1st love, (GOD's gun) I know this posting should be in one of the Semi-auto forums but I didn't know which one . Sorry. Thanks JGC
Look here: http://gun-deals.com/index.php?dealtype ... 1&subcat=5 There's a few VEPRs in 7.62x54R but the prices just went up a bit. If you look around the catagories there's some others listed from time to time. Centerfire Systems and I think J&G sales get Dragunov/PSLs in from time to time and as I find them I'll resurrect or list the deals on them.
Kyle514 if you bookmark this page http://gun-deals.com/index.php?dealtype ... 4&subcat=5 and check there from time to time Hex 91/30s are listed here. Most if not all places are out of them right now but as they come back up for sale I relist them. I'll look around today and see if I can find some.

Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
I just checked CMP web site for Garands like you suggested JYD and found everything I needed including grade and price info for all Garands. Thanks again for your help. By the way I know you said you had a Ford Model A what year is it? The first car I ever had when I was 15 was a A model 1931 2 door sedan. Kept it for many years until I went in the service and had to sell it. Of course I wish I had not. If you also have other old Fords I have (2) 1949 -50- 51 Ford shop manual for F series Trucks with a 1962 supplement included. Since I have two you can have one for free as thanks for your help. They are in perfect shape just let me know if you need one. JGC

I got a email from Buds today saying that they got a new shipment of Mosins in, in excellent condition. The email said they are just going to sell them under the very good condition ones for the same price, $109. Might just be marketing but I ordered another one. The other two I ordered from them were in really good condition so I figure I will be good either way.

Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
The local "WalMart of the outdoors" here in CT has about 2 dozen 91/30's, ALL in awful shape, for $150 each...Like the ugly, sickly dogs at the humane shelter, they grossed me out, but I still wanted to take home every single last one of 'em.
Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
Now that is not fair at all. You just made me want to search through every last one.
I bet tthere is at least 5 treasures in that bunch.

Take them home
Battle rifles are supposed to look ugly, they are used for ugly things. dou, a friend of mine has a '55 Pontiac, looks almost identical to your Chevy, same color even, Massive hp under the hood. You can get your own A Model, but expect to pay around $12,000-$14,000 for a driver , or $16,000-$30,000 for a show car. Yellow was not a color Ford offered for the A, but it was a popular color at that time, when the car was done over by it's last owner in the late 50's he chose to go with this color.

Re: 91/30 prices are creeping up
I didn't do either car, both were purchased from the last owners estates, I have repaired a number of things on the A, like putting all the E brake stuff back on it, but otherwise the cars are good as is. When the market started to slide a few years back I liquidated everything and put it into guns and these two cars and my RV. I had been moving back in time with each old car I picked up, the 30's and 20's were next on the list, figured I had better do it while I could. These cars are simplicity itself to maintain. No brake lines to rust ( mechanical brakes) a lawnmower has a more complex carburetor, you can dismount the tires from the wheels and fix a hole in a tube in half an hour, or less as you get good at it. No electronic anything. The T is not the easiest or safest car to drive in modern traffic, it mostly sees the neighborhood, the A will handle it OK, and I am pretty sure it gets better gas mileage than most compact cars.
