New England Westinghouse [SA] M91

Post by dou44 »

This is a 3 line New England Westinghouse made for the Russian Military In the period of 1915-1917, 770,000 rifles were manufactured by NEW. From what I can find only 222,260 were delivered before the Russian's defaulted on their contract's after the revolution of February 1917. Russia claimed the rifles failed to meet standards but in fact proved they were better quality rifles. The US bought the remaining rifles for $30 each. At some point this rifle was acquired and put into service by the Finnish Army. This rifle has the Finn spliced stock with matching bolt. The floor-plate and butt-plate are unnumbered. It also has the [SA] proof mark and 2 civil guard unit numbers added to it. Finland was broken down into districts and rifles with the S in front of the civil guard number were issued first. When I bought it it still had the original Finn dog collars on it.The sling is also an original Finn sling. From what I can find on the civil guard #'s it came from the Raasepori district.
