Wow nice rifle! They even sent a target with the sighting in shots? Thats cool. I'll bet the red on the charging handle is a cover. Those ak style black rifles just look so mean haha :)

Are you able to lock the slide open? I thought the newer Saigas came with the notch in the safety lever to catch the charging handle. I can't imagine Arsenal doesn't have something, or a lever like Saiga's shotties.
The charging handle sure is bright :bwink:
The slide doesn't lock open. This is as close to AK-74 issue as I can find on the market (although the caliber is 7.62x39 and it is semi-auto), and I don't believe the Russian issue guns have a hold open feature. I think other country clones have added that feature (Serbia?).

I really am finding out that I don't know crap about and AK because I have been shooting bolt action milsurps so much; infinitely more simple than this weapon. Also, I don't know what kind of ammo is good in these guns so I bought a small variety of stuff (Tula, Brown Bear and Wolf). Yes; the gun was laser sighted at the factory in Vegas and Arsenal provides a 25 Meter test target with each weapon. There are some other cool documents such as the original English language manual from Russia (Izhmash) and the "State" inspector's signature and seal (almost sounds like the old Soviet Union).

Davidson's is now sold out of this weapon. Between noon on 3 July and midnight on the 4th, they sold 44 units.

The way I understand it is that tula and wolf are pretty much the same ammo just with different names. They all should be fine. Ak's are made to function with anything. Brown bear is good. I read somewhere that wolf will even replace your firearm if their ammo damages it. But its an ak haha. On the saiga's there is a little lock open button just behind the trigger guard on the right side. It doesn't lock open on the last shot though. It has to be manually locked back. Arsenal might have removed it because it wasn't "authentic ak specs".

If anyone is interested, I see that Davidson's Gallery of Guns has just posted (as of 7-07-2012) another 56 units of the SGL 21-61 for sale.

I'd like to chime in and say that I was heavily influenced by this thread, so when I found one at a local gun shop last week, I put it on lay-away. After a week of obsessing over it, I decided I'd rather make monthly installments on my credit card than on the lay-away balance, so I went and got it. Here's a picture if anyone is interested.

I haven't fired it yet, but I've had it disassembled and cleaned and lubed and back together and it's all ready to go. I've got some bulk Tula ammo on order from SGAmmo, so we'll be making a range trip in the next week or so.

So, anyway, I just want to say thanks, guys. I don't think you've led me astray. :D

Incidentally, the service manual and other documentation included in the box characterizes this firearm as a "self-loading hunting carbine."

These guns evidently started out as hunting firearms in Russia and apparently have always been semi-automatic. Arsenal, Inc. rebuilds them with enough 922r compliant parts to sell in the US. From all I have read, this is the closest thing you can get in the US to Russian milspec AK-74. In other words, the gun is a replica of the Russian issue AK-100 series in semi-auto form (and in 7.62x39). I did a lot of research before I purchased this gun. I have now shot several hundred rounds through mine and love it. You will not be disappointed.

Now I am on the verge of buying a quality red dot optical sight and side mount. I think this gun is accurate enough and begs for a quality, low power, light weight optical site that is coincidental with the irons. I'm still researching all that to see what I want and what I can afford.

Please keep us updated on the progress of that project. I'm very interested in doing something similar.

I did a lot of shopping around and reading/listening/seeing reviews on the net and youtube. I decided not to make the large investment to buy an Aimpoint microdot. I went with a Vortex SPARC and a RS AKML mount. Here is the info on the system:

http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx? ... groupid=64

I ordered the sight from AIM Surplus (they are presently sold out). The mount must be individually fitted to the weapon which takes some effort, but the optic was a piece of cake to attach to the mount. The Vortex SPARC is highly rated and gets good reviews. The quality looks excellent for a Chinese optic. The stats are every bit as good as the AIM micro dot for less than half the price. The mount and optic look good on my gun. I have centered the optic over the bore but have yet to laser bore sight or shoot on the range. More to follow as I gain some experience with this system.
