Yard sale score!

Post by Izhevsk762 »

Hit up a yard sale today. I wound up with a decent amount of Lee reloading stuff, and some brass at great prices! The father of the guy I bought them from had been a gunsmith, he passed and left his stuff to his son. The son said he already had a much more advanced reloading set-up, so he was passing on some of his Dad's reloading gear for pretty cheap. I couldn't resist.

I got a Lee single stage press (used) with a Lee auto primer, and powder measure (both of those like new, in box) for $50!

Then, a set of Lee 7x57 mauser, a set of 7.62x54r, and a set of .32 ACP dies for $45.

Also got a Lee handloader for .30-06, and 500 pieces of once-fired winchester .30-06 brass for $30!

I guess I've officially entered the reloading world! I know there's still some stuff I need (scales, reloading manual, etc...), and I'm going to be doing a lot of research before I load anything. That, and I still need .303 and 8mm dies....

I'm glad I asked for this section, I'd imagine I'm going to be doing quite a bit of reading in here in the near future. :vcool:

Outstanding! This is the best post I've read all day. I am real happy for you, and I have the Lee stuff you mentioned too. I love Lee equipment. I love RCBS and some others too. But more of my stuff is Lee than anything else. I have a simple suggestion. I would recommend you try out that Lee 30-06 reloader soon, and even if you don't have a 30-06 you can learn so much by using the Lee Loader. Some people laugh at these, heck some people wouldn't be caught dead using Lee equipment, but nobody that I have talked to knocked it if they actually had used it. The more advanced I get with reloading, the more I appreciate my memories of handloading 38 special with the Lee Loader. The lee Loader neck sizes only, making the cases last longer, and once your brass is fire-formed to the gun that they were fired in, the accuracy is amazing with handloaded rounds that were done so simply. I think I have a Lee Loader for every caliber I own almost, and some calibers are no longer made, but can be found in vintage like new condition on Ebay. The Lee Loader is all I currently have for the 30-40 Krag. Have fun with it, you are gonna love it.

Bunky brings up a a good point about the Lee Loaders "they are neck sizer dies" in as much as trying it on the 30-06 is concerned the brass you bought came an unknown rifle to you so they probably want fit any rifle you own. As to liking reloading I'd say it's more like addictive as I reload everything I can. So enjoy your equipment and get a scale and I would recommend anything that Lee makes. They also back up that guarantee, I have never had a problem with them or RCBS, same goes of CH4D Custom, another good company. The new Lee reloading manual is an excellent buy also.

Score indeed! My Dad just left all his .30-06 stuff and his MEC 12 ga. reloader up here when he was here last. I guess I'll have to get a .30-06 again!

I only have one .30-06 (a sporter m1903), so I already have a few other cases that I've fired through that rifle. As long as I keep the brass with the rifle it was fired from, is it OK to just neck size it?

Yes.

One of the best things you can find is a buddy that reloads. Always follow the manual but it is nice to sit next to someone while you try something the first time.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!
