I don't have one, YET.
One of my 1938 91/30 rifles is a round Tula. It is nice to know that they are somewhat hard to come by.

Holy Crap!! A preservationist Bubba. That's a paradox. You're gonna fit in just fine around here. Here's some of the marks and what is known so far. Most are a mystery. http://www.russian-mosin-nagant-forum.c ... index.html and http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinMarks.htmBubbaDX wrote:No sir! The closest I came to DX was when I got Alaska and Hawaii when I was working toward my ARRL CW WAS Award in the late 1970s. Plus two qso's with Japanese stations. Used Heathkit HW-16.
Mostly just Ragchewed with US stations using CW with the HW-16, DX-60, home brew Tuna Tin2 and Heathkit HW-8. Have not been active for quite a while.

CQ DX = Calling any station that is far away from me (usually another country). (They would know by your call sign )BuckeyeSgt wrote:........I have no idea what the heck you all are talking about.Hombre wrote: CQ DX

ARRL = American Radio Relay League
CW = Continuous Wave otherwise known as Morse Code
WAS = Worked All States - getting the award requires that you contact at least one station in every state and have a card from them confirming the contact.
QSO = two way contact with another Amateur Radio Station
Ragchew = just shooting the bull instead of passing formal messages. (DX contacts exchange only signal reports and everyone would be PO'd if you started ragchewing with one of the contacts.)
73's = best regards
HW-16 is a 90 watt CW transmitter/receiver
DX-60 is a 90 watt CW and AM transmitter (AM = Amplitude Modulation)
Tuna Tin 2 is a 2 transistor fractional watt CW transmitter

Re: Just Bought My 2nd Mosin
My 1937 is a Finn, but not my 1938 Tula, both of them are refurbs, and both shoot surprisingly well. Nice rifle Bubba, and don't go gouging your eyes out with a fork, they got pills for that now but still....

Re: Just Bought My 2nd Mosin
LOL, yea probably couldn't shoot very well if I went through with that. The target is getting mighty small at 100 yards the older I get as it is, no need to help it along.
Hombre, that tuna can is very cool. I never could solder good enough to do anything like that. I can solder good enough to patch something back together, but that takes a lot steadier hand and a little more skill than I possess. I don't do much with SW radio anymore and I am currently only setup for UHF/VHF, but I do enjoy listening to the chatter.

Actually I enjoyed making stuff more than being on the air. As you know most of the Heathkit stuff was in kits and had to be built. In addition to the kit transmitters/receivers I built things like code practice oscillators, keyers, and a VTVM. The VTVM is wired pin to pin and is pretty complex inside.
I made a 40 meter CW one tube transmitter completely from scratch - even the chassis and cover. I made the cover out of an old sheet metal sign.
Here is some pictures of the VTVM and my home brew transmitter:

No sir! I'd rather gouge my eyes out with a fork than to deface a piece of history like this.
If you are considering buying even just one more Mosin... Consider getting your C&R FFL. It's the best $30 you will ever spend.

Nice work Hombre, very clean. I enjoy working on things, but I am not sure I have a steady enough hand to do something like that. That's pretty impressive work.

Re: Just Bought My 2nd Mosin
I mailed my application last week. There are plenty of WWII era rifles I would love to add to my collection before they either disappear from the market or the politicians make it impossible to import this stuff. The later is what I expect to happen.Rongo wrote:If you are considering buying even just one more Mosin... Consider getting your C&R FFL. It's the best $30 you will ever spend.

Welcome to the forum Bubba! I see you have found your second MN. I have been busy since I bought my first in April. Got sideways for a while with a slightly higher priced Winchester collectable. But that is behind me now. I will be lookin for my second MN but the wife doesn't know it!
I learned quite a bit in the last few months! These guys have made it much more interesting and I thank all of them!
I enjoy all of the enthusiasm and will share mine in the future!
