Turner's and the larger gun stores are way too high in So Cal. The $75.00 quoted to you is about as good as you can do in this area. When necessary try and stick to the "mom and pop" small dealers as they generally have the best prices but $75 is probably the cheapest you will find unfortunately.

Best suggestion is get that C&R application in ASAP and bypass that FFL01 requirement even on C&R guns and if you have Mosinitis you are going to need it. Unfortunately in CA it doesn't help on a handgun, you have to go through an FFL01 regardless, unless it's an antique.

Transfers in California in a shop will be around $75. Some will go a little lower, but it is why I got a C&R myself.

In the event I need something I cannot find from a private party my dealer will run 2 long guns or one long gun and one handgun on a transfer for me...for a whopping $10!

I looked into a C&R but one thing bothered me, the whole deal about my bound book and gun safes being subject to inspection by the ATF. A little too Big Brother for me. I will keep buying from private owners as much as possible and leaving as sparse a paper trail as I can.

Bound book in nothing, unless you don't enter things correctly. Your entire safe would not be inspected, just the rifles you buy while holding a C&R. If you keep the bound book correctly and you obeyed the laws, there is nothing to fear "IF" you got a inspection. They are very rare, but if it happens I have never heard of one that went bad. Most of the time if they find something you goofed on, they tell you to fix it.

All this fear of a C&R and the ATF is irrational and from people that have not held a C&R. It's easy. Just follow the simple instructions and it's not problem.

If you are so concerned, after you get your firearms and you think you are done, surrender the license and the BATF has no more control over you then before you had the firearms. And you are not required to turn in the bound book or keep it. You can destroy it if you like.

And in California you can expect to pay $75 to $100 to transfer a firearm in a shop or a 01FFL. The 01FFL here have to be in a commercial store front to hold the license and that is part of the cost they pass on. But it is the going rate here. Most of them only charge a fraction of that if they are ordering the rifle and selling it to you direct. Then there is the DROS (another $25 to the state), taxes and what ever. You can see why a C&R makes good sense in Calif.

What dolk said^^^

Some gun stores might run cheaper than $75, the cheapest I found is $50 in my area. Once you throw in the $25 DROS BS, plus sales tax, you are better off looking for an M44 private party. Check the marketplace forum over on calguns.net, and keep an eye on it. You should eventually be able to find one cheaper than $199, with no tax, DROS, or 10 day wait.

There is a poll at the top of this thread.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Maybe I am just layed back, but I ain't worried about ATF, big brother, black helicopters, spy satellites reading my money through the roof, or red light cameras. I do worry a little bit about too many conservative people not showing up at the voter booth however. C&R license isn't for everybody but I have never heard of a ATF inquiry or request to see a bound book. The only problem I have with showing my bound book is more due to embarrassment. I have had it for 2 years and am still on the first page. :b sad:

Didn't see the poll at the top.

I just went off the Subject title of "FFL Transfer fee in CA".

I'm not sure what the Poll has to do with the subject? It should be in a separate thread.
