M1 Garand

Post by countryboy3006 »

I started my mil surplus with the cheap mosins. Now I am interested in diversifying my collection and I think a M1 Garand would be a nice addition. Does anyone know a good place to start looking and what is the going rate these days? I have seen a couple in a few gunshops around here but they are hard to find and were all around $1000 or a little more. I would love to find a WWII era one but I would think that would be pretty hard to find and more than what I can afford to pay. I am really just looking for one that hasn't been bubbad that I can take to the range and shoot.

You start here http://www.odcmp.com/Sales/m1garand.htm, but only after you acquire some books on the Garand from Bruce Canfield, and Scott Duff, plus reading all of Rob P's posts on the M1 service rifle. Asking him for advice might not be a bad idea either. There is a great deal you need to learn before dropping a grand on a M1, more than I can cover in a forum post. Answering specific questions about a particular rifle is something we can do, however first you must do your homework, learn the M1.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Thanks for the info JYD. I have been reading everyting I can find online about them but i hadent heared of those books yet. I will have to find a copy of them. Its hard to wait but I want to make sure i get a fair price on a rifle that I know will work for me.

If you can afford it and you like to shoot a lot you might also consider the different M14 models..Try them both and the carbine too. Good luck! JGC

700 bucks will get you a service grade Garand from the CMP OTD. That includes shipping, notary on the paperwork, and joining a CMP affiliated club.

For the basics on an M1 you can start here:

The above advice on Scott Duff is spot on. His Green Book is all you really need.

I have seen used (well there all used, so we'll say private party) Garands in our local classified as little as $500.00. Checking local adds may work in your Kentucky location at least, as was pointed out education is the key when buying collectible milsurp rifles. :2cents:
