real or fake who has the best accuracy
real or fake who has the best accuracy
Hello all new to the forum I have a few mosins but I really want an accurate 91/30 PU I don't mind paying for the real deal if it's worth it I plan on shooting at 100-200yds. I do have my C&R FFL and am able to shop around I just was looking for accuracy advice. I know SOG and J&G are selling repos for $400 and I found 2 "CH" stamped Finn captures on Gunbroker for $600-$700 your thoughts on which way to go ? I know real snipers are tested at higher standards but that was so many years ago do they still hold the designated "CH" ?
Thank you in advance to all who take the time to respond to the newbies. I know our questions are boreing and dumb at times but we appreciate your time and knowledge

Welcome to the forum. I've heard good things about the repros, but IMHO that would be a crap shoot. Not all 91/30s are shooters and the repros are just 91/30s with scopes

Rick,
Forum Rules
"Discussions on reproductions sniper almost always start an argument and negative discussions. We have chosen to cut off discussion of these rifles."
Buying a new "reproduction" (Fake) sniper is the same as drilling it yourself. Discussion is not allow here. Sorry.

Re: real or fake who has the best accuracy
Forget about the PU, it's nothing more than a 91/30 rifle with a cheap shit commie scope stuck on it. You want accuracy at 200 yards you can get that from a Finn M39 using iron sights, you can get it at ranges past 200 yards with the M39. Every single one of my M39's has a better bore than any PU I have ever examined, the Finns were far more picky about bore condition than the Soviets were. The PU is a relic best stuck up on a wall, and a fake PU isn't worth the price of a cheap .22.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: real or fake who has the best accuracy
I kind of agree. They (PU Snipers) are collectors as far as I'm concerned. Just like any other model. You can never compare them to a modern rifle with a scope, it is not fair or realistic.
If you are hunting for a historical piece, then a real PU sniper can fill the bill. A reproduction will not fill the historical bill as it has no history at all. and if you are a "shooter" hunting for accuracy as many are on the forums, then buy modern.
In fact, if you are a shooter, you can buy a modern rifles and scope and it will be much more accurate and it will be cheaper and just as powerful and maybe more. And then there is the historic shooter. They are shooting older rifle just for the fun of it. The accuracy usually doesn't matter, it's more a matter of skill at that point.
No scolding intended, we get people who didn't read or digest the forum rules completely all the time. Reproductions always start arguments so we try to keep them off the forums here. It's no big deal.

Re: real or fake who has the best accuracy
Thanks guys guess my expectations are alittle high. I have 2 guns going through restorations right now soon as I get them back I will focus on my next Mosin. I love the history of this gun. I have the Nagant revolver, M38, M44, 9130. I have to add a sniper Thanks guys for your good info. I will check out those Finn M39 also may be what I'm looking for. I have no intrest in a modern gun I love the history and theres nothing like hitting metal at 300yds with an 80yr old gun when the guy next to you is trying to do it with a modern AR. Thanks guys you put things into perspective for me

You bet.....
If you love history, then altering them don't make much sense. As the history is gone when you do. That is what we are about here. Trying to get people to see that before they alter their military surplus rifles. Getting them to hit on target is half the fun of owning an original unaltered military surplus rifle.
Have fun with your rifles!

Re: real or fake who has the best accuracy
People conveniently forget that it's only the weapon in part. You can do everything in the world to tweak performance out of a rifle, but if the skill is lacking in the shooter then that rifle is as useless as tits on a bull. Skill, for a real military or Law enforcement sniper it means years of daily training and practice, and a great deal more than just knowing how to fire a rifle. Calculating in his head the effects of wind and humidity on a particular weight bullet and so on. Most wannabe snipers wash out of these programs because it is a skill not everyone is born with. Most anybody on this forum could hit a target at 200 yards with a refurb Mosin, that's not requiring of a great deal of skill, move that target out to 500 and most everybody here is out of the running, move it to 1000 yards and maybe one of us could hit it.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Re: real or fake who has the best accuracy
Of course at 1000 yards the target needs to be larger, and bright yellow, or I don't think I could see it. Does anyone have a old school bus they could donate?
If you look back in the archives of the forum and find some of the posts from Kari Prager, you might find some great stuff about accuracy. He was a talented guy. He studied and applied Zen principles to his shooting. Now I'm not familiar with that, but it was some kind of mental thinking that allowed him to remove all the thoughts of the world and visualize the bullet all the way from the chamber to the 10 ring. Also how to focus on the front sight- not the target.

Hire a kid to do the running out to the target, or better yet shoot on a military range with a manned pit out there so someone can wave Maggie's drawers when you miss.
