Just make sure and clean it good and don't worry about the pits. If it shoots good shoot it! There are interupter parts available. :D

i thought you said"gotta be 18 to own a long gun in illinois" so now you are saying you shot 515 rounds out of a mosin nagant in 1 day?? and you did it while drinking beer in a state you have to be 18 to own a long rifle??

Interruptor sometimes need bending a bit this way or that to get them just right. The .30-30 is keyholing because the muzzle is probably cleaning rod worn to death. It's not a military weapon, it takes very little to **** up the crown on a commercial rifle, and if it's the lever action I suspect it is then it possibly can only bee cleaned from the muzzle. Too bad. Pitted bores are the norm with milsurps, get used to them.

500 rounds is not much, I have done that in a days shoot. Not through one weapon of course, four or five, when I have the Garands and M14 out they can eat ammo pretty fast, add an M1 carbine to the mix and the ammo total goes way up. I am conditioned to that sort of shooting from a lifetime of doing it, for a newbie it would mean some sore muscles, and a bruise or two. At one point I was shooting a hundred rounds an evening after work through Mosins and US M1903's, would have shot more but the sun would be going down. Then ammo prices went up and put a stop to that fun.

I have too especially when I take out a couple of Mosins, a Mauser, and an Enfield and am out for the better part of a day.

But what about knocking the caps off beer bottles at 50 yards well enough that the beer is not lost?

And about the heavy pitting - why wasn't that noticed before or is he saying the pitting was due to shooting the 515 rounds?

He is blind and the beer was a lucky one in a million shot? :) I don't hold with drinking on the range, that's a recipe for disaster eventually so I have no first hand experience with shooting full beer bottles, but I have shot bottles and no matter where you hit them 147 grains of bullet traveling at near 3000 feet per second tends to shatter them and scatter the bits. Add carbonation and that bottle would explode. The only way to miss seeing pitting in the bore unless one is blind or looking at night without a light is to not look at all before shooting. This is a serious breech of safety as something could be stuck down there, erosion could be almost through the steel of the bore, there may be no rifling at all. Most people are at least curious about bore condition when they get a new firearm that they will have a peek down there. Failure to clean a new bore would cause pitting to be missed if the pits were grease filled.

It's all I can do at this time Hombre :) Best situation would have him standing in front of me at the position of attention while I examine the weapon, finding grease in the bore would result in me sitting in the shade of a tree with a cold drink while the boy ran around , and around, and around that tree three hundred times or until I was satisfied he would remember the lesson, but I can't be everywhere. If I found alcohol on the range it would become a suppository for the offender.

I read "opening beers" meaning he was shooting at beer cans and exploding them, not knocking the cap off a beer bottle. Depending on the brand it is probably cheaper than "opening" cans of shaving cream or soda pop.
Of course, I could be wrong

And it's all I can do to limit myself to one bandolier of M2 through the Garand. Strictly from a point of not wanting to blow through all my ammo in a couple sittings :popgun:

To me that would be a waste of good beer. Either way, hopefully he was just trying to sound macho.

Terrible waste of beer! Now as for the over 500 rounds even with the mosin that's not an issue if you use a shooting jacket or recoil pad. If I am going out to do serious shooting between March and November I take the recoil pad due to the heat, from November through February I use the jacket. Never even feel it the next day. If I'm only shooting a box or two I don't bother. However I will not run more than a box or two through my 42 Iz. Those war time barrels just get too hot too fast due to the lack of quality which was sacrificed for volume. Now don't get me wrong she shoots straight but she will take four hours to cool down after two boxes. My older ladies don't heat up like that until 200 or more rounds. So depending on what year his mosin is I'll call BS on the number of rounds unless she's pre-WWII. Now if I remember my shooting gloves I can run a third box but I worry about damaging the barrel so I never remember my gloves if I take the '42. Just my :2cents: though.

Ya, I read it that he's shooting at beer not shooting WITH beer.......515 rounds???> hummmm, BUT, even at the advanced age of 66 I can easily run thru 150 in a Mosie session, so maybe.....and if I toss a 22lr in the jeep to practice basics I can easily double that.

I'll get flamed for sure with this but: I do NOT find the 91/30 or the M39 to be difficult re: recoil. I honestly do not have a single issue with a session of 20 or even 30, 5 shot groups fired from a bench. No pad either. I do however do some .308 bench-rest work so maybe I'm just used to it or I could be brain dead as my wife says.....never know these days. :chuckles: :chuckles: Older is as older does!!!

Bad shoulders for me I was hit in 2009 while on my Harley so if I get too many rounds without the pad I'll hurt but then again what do you expect when you get hit buy a Benz S550 at 60mph and you break your shoulders, left arm was nearly severed, strain your neck, and crush your heel. It has gotten better I could not shoot for 18 months and could only go 1 box with no pad.
