My first (and probably only) sniper

Post by pacanis »

Junkyard said you don't sell Garands, but I did. I got rid of that CMP M1 Garand that has been giving me and the gunshop who sold it to me all kinds of grief. But I didn't agree to let him buy it back until I had a line on a replacement. Enter my still in the box M1D sniper shipped from DLA Defense Distribution Depot in AL to someone in DE a long time ago. I'm not sure if this is considered a DCM Garand or not, as it came with no paperwork stating so. Maybe this one actually was destined for military or guard use and not for sale to civilians :vconfused:
The LGS got two in from someone he knows and I got pick of the litter. I chose the Winchester WWII dated receiver Garand over the Springfield, with some differences in all the goodies that went along. The big differences being the scope, which I believe to be more correct, and the 1905 late production bayonet made in 1943 by Wilde Drop Forge & Tool. 16" of steel!
And I've already run a bandolier through it :D Once I dialed in the irons and scope she was shooting tight. In spite of getting warm.
I am in love with that side mounted scope! Especially for as much as I like to challenge myself using irons. Here she is.

By the way Pac, from what I can see it looks like you have some beautiful country to shoot in. Very nice. Is that your place?

You're more than welcome to put some clips through it if you are ever over this way, Bunky. And yes, that's my backyard.
One of the guys at the gunshop asked me what's next and I said nothing. (That's not counting the one that just shipped today  That one doesn't count :bwink: ) Heaven is right. I can't wait to tear it apart and grease it up.

Thank the Lord, for a second there as I started reading I thought you were going to say you traded a Garand for a f***in' PU! Almost gave me vaporlock! Yea, that probably is a DCM rifle, not everybody held on to the papers, while you hear story's about things walking away from government service most of them are bullshit, the services do keep account of their firearms fairly closely. There is no difference between the Winchester Garand and the other three makers other than the price, Winchester is lower production plus has name recognition so the seller sticks it too you a bit more. Very nice example of a D, I see a 1984 date on the box, these were not walking off a US bace in 1984! Very cool, now you will need five times as much ammo as before :) :vcool: :vcool:   This people, is a top quality American made sniper rifle       :bravo: :bravo:

 no, no PU sniper yet. Maybe next batch
And yes, I will need much more ammo. I've been picking up some cans of Greek surplus here and there, but I need more. Much more :D

Nice one Pac and I especially noticed the serial number because I have one made probably the same month, May 1944. Mine doesn't have the nice optics though.

I've got the cone flash hider  And the grenade launcher sight, some other odds and ends...
The scope has a sleeve that slides out over the front lens, but yes, the eye piece sun shade would be nice. The other M1D had that, but it was a different scope and I'm not sure it would have fit mine. I should have tried, but of course they didn't want me swapping what came with what. The Springfield had the slotted flash hider, T37 or something? It didn't have the gas tube lock so could only be shot with the flash hider on. Another reason I picked this one. And the fact it was a Winchester receiver.
I think he said he was putting that one up on GB tomorrow. Supposedly it is unfired. I did not recognize the scope manufacturer and the scope looked like it had been in rings. It started with H I think. He thought maybe it had been used on 1903 sniper :vconfused:

Holy Crap, Weldon. That's pretty cool. Our receivers might have been on the same ground in the same hands.

Wow Pacanis! That is an incredibly great find. From what I can see in the pics, she looks right. The VCI wrap is also a good incicator of a DCM sale. The M84 scope replaced the M81 and the M82 scopes of WWII. They were the two main standards of WWII, the only diffrence being the reticle. The M84 was designed and accepted too late for WWII, but saw use in Korea and Vietnam. The M1D itself may or may not have saw action in WWII at the very tail end. It is debated by collectors quite alot. Would like to see all the other goods that came with her when you get the chance. And some 500 yard target groups!

I am currious about the other rifle you passed on as you said the scope was diffrent. The other scope I am aware of on the M1 Sniper series of rifles is the 4 power Stith-Kollmorgen, and used only on USMC M1C rifles that were rebuilt during the Korean War. The Rifle itself once changed over by the Corps was known as the MC-1952 Sniper rifle. I hope you did not pass on one! :beek: Any chances you could go look and take pictures of it?
