Grand theft 870! Haha

Post by ponycarman »

I got my remington 870 wingmaster out of layaway today! Yayyy! Its not perfect but super nice for the money. Im giving her a once over and a thorough cleaning right now. I pretty much stole it at $150 :D . More pics are coming after the cleaning. Sorry its a little blurry.

Haha yep I hid them good! I cleaned her up as best I could. Leaned alot about it too. Internals are good with a little rust here or there but no more from what I can tell. The only real issue I see with it is that the shell lifter has a crack running across it. I cycled some shells through it and it doesnt seem to effect the function. Probably from clearing a jam with the old slam the but on the ground trick. The finish on the outside is worn. Some slight imperfections and pitting in the blueing but no rust. Blueing is wearing off in some places. I might hit it with some cold blue to see if that will help a little. I looked up the barrel code to see if I can find out the date of manufacter. I looks like it was made in august of 1971 :). Barrel is smooth and shiney inside. None vent rib and a fixed modified choke. The stock and forend is in very nice shape. Pretty much perfect. When I took apart the magazine I found an old wood plug, so my guess is this puppy has havested alot of critters haha. The action is smooth as silk. Im very happy with the purchase haha. More pics

You did good. Rust cracked part probably wouldn't cost you much if you wanted to replace it.

I think I took care of the rust. The cracked carrier/lifter might be overeating interesting to find. As far as I know the silver solid lifters like this aren't made anymore. Just the newer ones with the slot cut in it like my other 870.

I don't even have a regular reloading setup yet haha. Is it worth reloading shotgun shells with the cheap packs of ammo that can be bought? I guess the heavier loads would be worth it. First I need to get a basic setup and learn to use it haha.

I was reloading shotshells before anything else, it's easy with a Lee shotshell loader.

I've been eyeing the lee complete kits on ebay and other stores. I don't know if I have room to put it somewhere in my appartment though. Now that my collection has grown a good bit I'm looking into other fun aspects of the shooting sports :) but its so hard to slow the gun buying

The Lee shotshell loader setup takes up very little room, I mounted mine on a piece or wood and then I can clamp it to any table to use. I make all sorts of things with it from black powder dragons breath loads to rock salt ones.

Thats actually a great idea. I might end up getting some reloading stuff next instead of finding another gun. And its cheaper than a firearm so it shouldn't take too long to save up enough.

I cast my own buckshot from a .31 cal round ball mold I use for my 1849 Colt, but .36, or .44 round balls can be used, you can make buck and ball loads also.

Pretty cool. I think I may start with conventional rifle and pistol ammo first. I'm got more rifles and pistols than shotties. I would love to load 38sp/357mag, 30-30, 30-06, and mosin rounds. Haha and thats just to start. What all is needed to cast your own bullets? I've never really looked into the process.
