When I looked at those pics I really found my liking for that one I got with the light tiger stiping earlier this year that much more enticing. Only negative to the one I got was there is an extra spring on the trigger group to take out slop and that for some reason takes awy from the usual great trigger pull the 91/59's all seem to have. Still just a great little looker though. Bill :D

None... I was speaking generally. I've never cut down a Mosin-Nagant. Modern rifles that had muzzle damage, yes. I also really question how many bores were really ruined by cleaning. A test I read about on a pristine M1 Garand (yes, I cringed) told that it took 60,000 strokes from the muzzle with the issue cleaning rod to bring the bore down a grade.

So you would rather I counterbore the rifling? I can't see how that wouldn't be a permanent change.

I ask where and how much for a carbine these days, and I get reamed over something I said I didn't want to do? Wow. Thanks fellas.

Counterboring is an action that requires a jig that can immobilize the rifle absolutely and drill with precision, this is beyond the capabilities of even most gunsmiths, it is an arsenal job. If that cut is not absolutely precise the rifle will not have any accuracy at all, I do not recommend to anyone that such an act be undertaken.

What do carbines go for? There was a nice M38 in the forum classifieds the other day , I think it was $200-$250 something like that. This is around the going rate these days for a Mosin carbine that is not a type 53, and the 53's seem to be catching up. Soon Soviet refurb carbines will crack $300, I believe 91/59's already do.

Thank you, JYD. That's what I was looking for! I will go look at the M38 in the classifieds, too.

I was just lucky to find a M38 at a gun show last year. I have not seen one since. I jumped on it even though the price was a bit high at that time (180) and it is a nice Izhevsk refurb. It is also counterbore but a great shooter. The weight and balance of the gun is much different than a M44. I like it better.

The M38 is my favorite Mosin carbine, When they were cheap I was grabbing up spare 1943 M38's "just because" and I am glad I did it as now I have them to play with. I am cheap, when prices go over $150 or so I lose interest in acquiring more than one unless it's a Garand, or US 1903. In 2006 that M38 in the classifieds would have been around a hundred bucks or so and I would have jumped on it, in fact I did jump on one identical to it that showed up on the board at that time. The M38 is light, easy to maneuver and hump around, doesn't take up much space in the vault, and like all M38's it has globe and post sights that I can see. I always like a rifle I can actually shoot fairly well.
