A real PU sniper

Post by Junk Yard Dog »

With all the questions about PU snipers on the board of late, and the various fake models offered as real and so on I thought I would bring this PU up. This PU sniper is Unquestionably, without any possibility of doubt, a 100% original M91/30 PU sniper. It is not refurbished, and was captured in battle, it is 100% as it left the arsenal after it's manufacture. No mother******in' fakers of snipers have ever been close to this PU. This is a real Soviet block PU sniper.
Think I am getting a little tired of the is it fake, can it be half fake, should I buy it anyway despite it's being 30% fake, PU posts? Yep.
Junk Yard Dog wrote:I shot some new pics of this one, possibly one of the grimmest rifles in my collection. North Vietnamese sniper rifle provided to them by their socialist brothers in Hungary and captured someplace in Cambodia in 1971 by US Forces. This rifle was captured in combat by the veteran I bought it from, it has been used to kill US soldiers and that makes it fairly unique in my collection. Fully matching, Hungarian country code 02 marked on everything, and in the exact condition as when it was captured just about 40 years ago. The former owner is someone I know locally, he fell on hard times back in the 90's and sold me the rifle with the stipulation that he could buy it back and that I must never sell it. It's been 17 years now and I have not heard a peep about it, I suppose he decided to put bad memory's behind him. It's not a nice feeling when you pick up a rifle like this with a known past, I can't help but think that there are names on that wall in DC because of the use this rifle was put to. It spends most of it's time in storage, this is the first time it's been out since 2006, and it's going right back again.

Ahhh, so you DO have one of these. I could have sworn you said something about not having a scoped milsurp :redfaced:
VERY nice rifle, Jim. Truly as real as it gets. If I ran into one of those I'd own it, too. I have no inkling to get one from either Aim or RGuns, but I would love to own that one.
Got anymore?

It's the only scoped milsurp I own, and I didn't scope it :) NO, I have no others like it, I think there is at least one more on the board, Hungarian PU's a rare, I was told the bulk of them were sold to the North Vietnamese, and if that is so the only way they came to the US was in a duffelbag. Unrefurbished, original as issued PU snipers of any sort are rare, we have the one that showed up here the other day, from Canada was it? But other than that I have seen no others.
I said I don't scope milsurps, when I get to the point that my vision is so bad I can't shoot anything reliably past 10 yards then I will move the target stand ten yards from my bench :) I have scoped commercial sporters it I just must make a distance shot accurately, no need to go hacking on my milsurps.

Who said anything about aim rifles?? This is not a Aim rifle, R guns, or any other current US importers PU sniper. I have no idea what Aim's rifles have been doing, and since as yet nobody I know has come forward with the story behind the Aim rifles that I will find believable I have no opinion on them. I am just a little tired of hearing debate about the Aim rifles as if they were anything more than at most another refurbished PU. It would be nice if they prove out to be the real deal, better for people who have spent money to own them than me, I have no dog in that fight. I posted this PU to remind people what the " Holy Grail" ( to use a phrase I heard here recently) of snipers, and milsurps in general is. This PU is not a refurbished anything, it's parts are not pieced on by some importer, this weapon was captured in battle by US forces fighting the communists. This weapon has taken American lives, and that action cost it's last North Vietnamese owner his life, it is a trophy of war, and it's history is not unknown. There are more Hungarian PU's out there, I have watched three sell on GB in six years, and know of three more in this country, and one in Australia so they are obtainable. The other day we had the honor of seeing a real, unrefurbished Soviet PU sniper here on this board, that is impressive, that is worth dropping a G on to own should one like it come along. Refurbished PU's are Cold War relics to be sure, their WW2 history has been dulled by parts swapping and refurbishing, but they are weapons put away by a paranoid state to kill Americans in a war that never happened. For that history alone they are worth having so long as they are actual Soviet refurbished original snipers. Are they worth getting worked up about? No, not for me anyway, I have enough Cold War relics to last several lifetimes. If I didn't have any I would consider spending $400, maybe $450 for one, but I find rifles like this Hungarian, and that Soviet model from last week to be somewhat closer to history, it's written in every scrape, or worn spot.
Enough of all that, there is an ongoing thread dealing with whatever Aim's snipers are, questions and references to Aim's snipers belong there, not here. Now, if you have a PU like this please feel free to post it, Original, not refurbished snipers, Soviet, Hungarian, Polish ( I know there is one on this board) battle damage welcome :)

Holy Grail?! :o
Come on now, Jim... everyone knows the Holy Grail of milsurps is a G/K43...

For some reason the reply comes out like that when I post it regardless of the spaces I leave, could be the spell check feature, I don't know. If I cut and paste something from the computer, or my email to the reply box the paragraphs are in place. The Holy Grail of milsurps is a Committee of Safety musket, or the actual Brown Bess that fired the shot heard around the world 19 April 1775 :)

It would indeed be hard to duplicate that one in todays world. I have just about given up reading what has been written over on the other boards about the new influx of snipers. It is soooo filled with assumptions and inuendos I welcome something that is for sure real and enjoyable to see and probably shoot too. I have found the hard way that I can not shoot accurately with a post and reticle scope and must have cross haired scopes to use one. My how old eyes are such finicky things to deal with! Ten years ago I couldn't shoot real good with peep sights and now I am fine with them. Maybe I should try the suction cup eye thingy I bought back them again because maybe I can now use it too? Like they say this getting old thing is not for the weak!

Nice to see the PU sniper in all its glory! Thanks for putting it up there! Bill :D

If memory serves, there is a picture in the book, Marine Sniper showing Carlos Hathcock with a PU that was taken from a sniper that was after the bounty on "White Feather" And also the famous bullet through the scope was a PU I think. I don't think well so :2cents: and worth less. :?

He did shoot the NVA sniper through the scope of the guys PU, it very likely was a Hungarian like this one, but it was stolen from him in camp. The PU's were sold to the North Vietnamese by their socialist "brothers" in Hungary to help fight the imperialist Americans. I can't imagine that they were easy items to bring home from the field, and keep safely stored away until someone rotated back to the World. The man who brought this one home was a junior officer in the USMC, he probably had access to some means of transport for it, and secure storage.

Great photos, well done! I'm new to this board and just picked up a 1936 Izhevski in excellent shape from Big 5 today. They had a "sniper" version with this same type of scope, leather covers and three posts, real clean for $599.00.

Would this be considered a good deal? I gave $179.00 plus commiefornia fees for the Izhevski.

Hello and Welcome to the forum :), The field of PU snipers is full of fake rifles, these are sniper lookalikes assembled from regular 91/30's and some new made scope parts, no historical value, and not worth the money. A real authenticated PU sniper from R Guns will set you back $800+, this is the going rate for the real thing ( Soviet version) be very careful when buying any PU, learn them well first, know what to look for and how to tell a fake from the real deal ( read up on the forum in all the PU sniper posts) Hungarian PU's like the one I have here seem to have only been imported in a GI's duffelbag from the Vietnam War, there are very few of them around and this drives up the price considerably, they rarely come on the market.
1936 Izhevsk, nice, first year for the round receiver at Izhevsk, is the rifle one of the currently imported refurbished models or an older issued one?
