Slugged the barrels on my mosins

Post by ISPKI »

Hello folks! I recently slugged the barrels on my m91/30, my 28/30 and my friend's m44. I was wondering what people thought about these measurements. I used lead sinkers with grease on them for the slugging process and ran about 5 of them down each barrel.

My m91/30 measured .3145in on avg.
My M28/39 measured .3090in on avg. (I actually pulled almost this exact measurement every time)
My friend's m44 measured .3137 on avg.

These were measured with a micrometer accurate down to .00001in.

I haven't slugged any of mine but i don't reload any lead yet. If i had a M28 or 28/30 i would slug that but alas i don't. :violin: :tissue:

I was going to slug the new T-53, then after trying to see down the bore, I decided to take it to the smith to see about a possible counter bore. The Smith dropped a light in the bore, looked at me a little funny and said, "I didn't know they made these things in a smooth bore........"

Far as I can remember from things I read elsewhere allowing for some wear your measurements are about right by my memory. There has been constant comment on the 28/30's really requiring something other than the normal surplus and maybe even handloading with a 308 bullet but I have always shot my normal surplus which shoots as good as I aim in them so I have ignored it. There are a bunch of the 28/76's around that won't shoot surplus and require hand loads with a proper sized bullet. That plus the fact they never saw a war or shoot in anger makes them totally unwanted or liked even by me. Just as soon buy me a Remchester or something modern. Bill
