Anyone use their Mosin in Service Rifle competition ?

Post by midnattsolen »

Hello, I was wondering if anyone uses their Mosins in Service Rifle matches ? The club where I shoot holds service rifle matches once a month. Most of the competitors use either Garands or AR15s. The matches are kind of informal as they allow competitors to shoot from the bench if they choose. All shots are made at 100 yards as the 200 yard range is uphill and not useful for prone. I plan on trying out a Mosin and will be developing a load. Anyone have any advice ?

For the first question...I wish they had something like that at the range I paid membership fees to....I would in a heart best. Second question....I would use the same ammo I already use. Jmo. Surplus seems pretty dead on. More so then me.

I too would enjoy that. I think a 200 yd fight would be better though. IT would be tough on the plateeks then  I think if you look in the ammo and reloading forum, or ask the reload question there you will find some info. :D

The "official" range here is a good 25 miles out but it is only $35 a year. The gas to get there though is $$$$$$$

I hear ya buddy! My range is an hour away also. They have great competition matches. I joined USPSA for their pistol matches but the military F Class match is dominated by Garands and they say unflatering things about Mosins's so I won't be entering in any of those. Price of gas is a major factor when it's a 55 mile drive one way. MY bike makes it easier for pistol shooting but still haven't found a way to carry the rifles yet.

Yea I never hear about any matches or anything at the range. Then again it is a State Wildlif refuge too. Altho there is a good indoor pistol range bout 13 miles away but since I do not own any handguns its useless to me!

An organized range with matches would be nice, currently my range is the desert 25 minutes west of town.

Our free state run range is about 15 minutes away from the house and it is usually wide open for use. There are any number of other ones free around here and there is an indoor pistol range open year round 7 days a week with a great restaurant and sports store attached about 10 minutes away. Then there is another one down about 15 miles away toward Buckhannon that I have looked for but never found. This is a gun orientated society in WV and I love living with people who think that same as me and act normal to me and what I like. Oh the skeet range and club is walking distance down the street and my both neighbors have ranges in their yards too. I shoot in the driveway into a huge bank of dirt towards the hill above me too. You got to pick where you live by how the people and state government treat you and hope the idiot Feds don't overcome what you enjoy. Bill

We have plenty of free rages in the South.

Gas transmission lines right of ways are good.

Electric transmission lines are better, you have something to attach your target to.

Any long straight road. The signs hold up well for rimfire, but mosins will cut the sign-post too quickly.

Other good places are our lakes and rivers, which we have plenty of. I hate jet-skiers.

To get back on track with the OP, I would like to shoot my mosin in comp but need to get better with that front sight. So far I can hit the steel at 200 yards but seem to shoot a little left. May have to drift that front one a little. If I don't hit center those garand guys will be unbearable!

I've used both a M44 and a 91/30 at my clubs high power matches, up against mostly AR-15s, M1As, and M1s. I placed middle of the pack with both of them with surplus ammo, I was kinda surprised. Maybe the concussion wave from the M44 threw the other competitors off
