Re: Well Gents, I made some changes!!!!!!
At first glance, many of you are gonna think, "Whats the big deal? Looks like an SAI standard walnut model." But its the subtleties of the build and the fact that one part has genuine combat service in Iraq that make this diffrent. I called in a ton of favors, I also owe a couple favors to have had this rifle built. To get it in my paws quicker, I have been selling on evilbay and G.B. like a mad man. But it was worth it. The receiver was purchased by the retired Marine Gunny armorer who built this for me out of a lot of 5 he bought back in 2003. This one was the first in the serial # run, and the last one he built up, (he does this as a retirement hobby, not as a full time employment) and I have quite the deal on it price wise. Most folks will spend the big bucks for Fulton, LRB, or Smith Enterprises receivers, but as he put it, "if they are in spec, cast or forged, does not matter whose name is on it, they have all won and placed high in competion shooting." "You'd have to expend a life time of continous shooting to even try and wreck one!" The remainder of the parts, less the stock are USGI. And through wheeling and dealing I came up with all NIW parts, from friends and strangers alike. Because I may shoot two levels of competition, she currently wears a NIW H&R surplus barrel, if I drift more into Service Rifle, that may change to a medium weight in the future. The gas system is unitized via the USMC weld method, and the un-neutered USGI flash hider has been reamed to N.M. Specs. She also wears a N.M. .062 front sight. I can swap these easily enough for standard USGI parts when shooting CMP M14 matches, and back to the better goods when shooting NRA Service Rifle. (If I had the cash I would buy two and leave them, but who knows if that will ever happen?) The stock is a Boyds, that has been fitted and adjusted for horizontal and verticle balance, and although not bedded, locks up TIGHT! I have to use a mallet to get lock up. She has been contoured to be M14 match legal, but still provide beef for Service Rifle. The USGI trigger group has been smoothed up and set to break at 4.6lbs, which is .1lb above the 4.5lb regulation limit. Leaves me some wiggle room
.
This pretty much leaves us at the hand guard, and yep you probably guessed it by now, The handguard saw service in Irag in 2004 through 05 with my friend Mike, who was a DMR for his platoon. When his rifle went in to maintence at one point, the armorer swapped out for a new one because of a small chip at the rear. It does not effect anything, but they swapped it. Mike got it back as a souvenir, since it was going in the trash. When I told him what I was doing, he sent it to me to use on my build, so that my rifle would have some genuine "USMC War Service" in at least a part of it. Alot of my fellow Jarheads helped me out here, but so did two Army Doggies who have been friends and shooting partners for over 20 years. With out that military bond, I could not have done this, and at the final price as well. Still expensive, but half of what it would be with out the help and connections of friends.
I would now like to thank pacanis for shelling out the last $90.00 on my military Garage sale needed to pay off the Gunny for his time and receiver!!
And now, some pics.....................

Very nice Rob, mine was also built by a retired Marine Gunny, an armorer, but back in the early 90's. Very cool

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Seriously though this rifle has so much sentiment and friendship built into it from the get go that I don't think I have any other possesion that I treasure more. And it is not a safe queen. I fully intend to shoot it alot. The Gunny put 150 rounds through it after completetion so she should also be well settled. No kinks to work out. "Accuracy" he says, "will surprise the heck out of you."

Yeah I know how that goes. My Garand now has gone from being a present from my only uncle to a rifle that I've fine tuned with your help as well as parts that were yours and some I got as recommendations from you. Though your's is not a Garand we shoot the same ammo now and have the exact same NM 0.62" front sight. I love it. One of these is on the list.Sgt. Re: Well Gents, I made some changes!!!!!!
The day may come when I fall into a Garand again. I thought heavily about it while selling off anything that was not tied down to fund this project.
But even though the receiver is comercial I definately feel like I am "home" again with USGI. I am making a commitment to myself to regain my edge in shooting and this is what I consider the top of the line in service rifles. The M1 would be my very close second. I never consider plastic toys (M16 / AR15) as fitting that picture for me. I am too much of a historic nature to embrace modern firearms as anything but tools for work. Must be the generation gap in me!

Now that is a proper thing to swap, sell & swindle for. A very sound move on your part.

Very nice! And the fact that you had a direct hand in getting her together makes it that much sweeter.
Sweet build. I can't wait to see a picture of a target and feel jealous, lol.

Rob, that's a beauty. And I can sense the joy you have for owning it. When a certain amount of sacrifice goes into it like this one, it's no wonder it's your most prized. If you had a bank vault full of cash, some high-dollar easy acquisition could not even rate on the same scale. I'd say this one is the perfect marriage of wood and steel, with a measure of blood, sweat, and patriotism mixed in to make a sure winner. Congrats friend!:P

Now comes the secondary expense, GI magazines, at least 20, sling, GI bipod, and most of all 7.62x51mm ammo, ten thousand round reserve at least, plus a few thousand more for shooting practice
