K-Model 1871 Mauser Cavalry Carbine.

Post by martin08 »

I don't know why I like old guns, but I do. And I really like this one.

It's a Model 1871, single shot in 11X60mm. Manufactured in OEWG for King Frederick Wilhem of Prussia in 1876, with an in service date of 1877. It still retains the front saddle lanyard ring. It was issued to the 3d (Prussian) Garde-Ulan (Regiment), 2d squadron, weapon number 136 in squadron. Ulan (sometimes Uhlan) = lancer. Regiment raised 1860.

There are very few of these about in the wild, and it is not to be confused with the cut down 1871 Infantry rifle, which was converted to 45-70. Yep, this is the real deal, and it is old, and I like it for some reason. Enjoy, and thanks for looking.

Beautiful markings and stamps! These old rifles are small works of art in my opinion and yours is a good example. What's not to love? I love the white metal against the dark finish of the stock. Sometimes I actually prefer a good worn bluing look. These cavalry carbines are great looking rifles.

The receivers on these are supposed to be in the white. The barrels were a originally a brown finish, and mine has nice bluing under the wood line. But on top there isn't a lick of original finish remaining. Oh, well. It's still good.

That is great. My buddy has one of those. He loads up the original BP loads and says it is a good shooter.

Thank you, all.

I can also say that once they designed the sight picture for this gun, they threw the blueprints away and went back to tinker toys on all military firearms since. This thing shoulders, levels, centers, and points so naturally that I can even see the front post on the target without my cheaters....
