1915 New England Westinghouse Company Mosin Nagant

Post by TacticalFlash »

I have a 1915 New England Westinghouse Company manufactured Mosin Nagant which was purchased at auction some 20 odd years ago. Its been on display in a rack with a Lee Enfield and a Mauser Kar 98k for the entire time.

I would like to know more about the weapon. I've read the general "wikipedia" type information about this version of the Mosin Nagant but would very much value feedback from the enthusiasts, fans and knowledge experts who follow this site. I have attached pictures of the rifle in the hopes it will start a conversation thread. I would also appreciate a sense of its historical, monetary or collectors value too. If it is deemed worthwhile, I would like to have it considered for the "Showcase". Sorry for the tightly cropped pictures - due to the limitations of only 500 kb size allocation per shot. Perhaps if showcased I can use HD quality shots.

Thanks and regards.......

It was made in the US for Russia to be used in WW1. Russia ended up defaulting on the contract due to internal conflict and not all of the US made M91's were delivered. Your rifle was one of the ones that was delivered to Russia. It was later purchased or captured by Finland at some point. The stock it is in is a Finnish made stock and the SA in a box on the left rear of the barrel shank is a Finnish Army property mark.

Unfortunately it appears that some one sanded and refinished the stock on your rifle. I can tell because the color is too light, the wood is too smooth, and the finish on the wood looks to be incorrect.

I agree with shmlnaaa about the refinished stock. It is a very clean looking rifle, have you had her out to the range? I bet she shoots fantastic. The Finns were very good at producing accuracy from there rifles.

Lately it is hard to figure what dollar value to place on these rifles, other than one like that would sell for over $250.00, and the way some auctions have been going, I would not be surprised to see a bidding war take it to over $500.00.

Every rifle needs a story

Steve, one that was on GI. I was looking through their US milsurp rifles and there it was, a New England Westinghouse model 1816  I didn't know at the time, but Brad had it on his watch list :redfaced:

It was on my watch list too. I am glad you got it.

I am saving my pennies for two weeks from now. I have this gutt feeling that I am going to find a new condition 1892 M-91 at the gun show, and I am going to need about $100.00 to bring it home.

Thanks Steve. Like I told Des earlier, I can't wait to see the details on it. The sling hangers caught my eye. And they aren't like the Finn hangers on the one above. It will fill my American made Mosin niche I have been needing.

And good luck at the gun show coming up. I have a lever gun niche that needs filled if you'll be on the lookout... if you run into a Winchester 1895 in 7.62x54r for $100, pick it up for me :D

I can't thank everyone enough for their feedback and insight - the Finish Army angle never occurred to me.
The gun has not been fired since I've had it so I can't comment on its accuracy. I clean it routinely and feel very responsible for maintaining its very good condition I received it in. After nearly 100 years, the bore remains in bright, clean condition.

I appreciated getting a sense of its value as I have been contemplating parting with it after enjoying it for so many years.

Regards to all......and thanks again.
