R1A1 FAL NOW WITH PICTURES!
R1A1 FAL NOW WITH PICTURES!
Well me and a guy went ahead and traded. He's getting my Ar15 and I am getting a very nice R1A1 with a few mags, DSA picatinny dust cover, some sort of custom PSG1 style stock and pistol grip (gonna sell those and use the cash to get a normal stock), also has some sort of aftermarket handguard on it, gonna give it a chance before I decide what to do with those. Hopefully pictures by either Friday or monday of next week.

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I'd suggest getting wood furniture. Looks really nice on the FAL rifles and many of the earliest British ones were equipped with it. Not to hard to find on internet searches either. Look forward to seeing it.

I would love to get an original wood set on it but the bad thing about that is the 922R game. FALs only need 7 US made parts to be compliant and I have a feeling that the set on it currently contributes to the count. I would buy an American set but they are too expensive for me.
The current forearm/handguard that is on it now required the removal of the forearm/handguard retaining ring and was wondering if there was anyway to get one back on there without removing the barrel.

I am either gonna pick the rifle up this Thursday or Friday. UPS is really on the ball lately, the R1A1 got here in 2 days and I sent my rifle out today and their projected time of arrival to the other guys destination is 2 business days which means it will arrive there Thursday. I am hoping there will be no hang ups and everything will arrive on time, that way I can have my FAL before the weekend!

Here it is. It needs a bit of work. I need to take the gas system apart and clean it up a bit, also need to take it off so I can remove the lower collar of the free float tube that way I can sell that handguard set and get a normal one. Also gonna sell the butt-stock and pistol grip. Still on the fence when it comes to the dust cover but who knows.
I think this rifle will look pretty good once I get a proper stock set on it. Also need to get some ammo, I had some stuff made in 1982 and the gun liked the first 6 or so rounds but then it was like NOPE and decided it didn't like it. I've heard that the ammo isnt the best so I'm thinking some silver bear should be a good test platform.

Does anyone here know how to detail strip the gas system?
Re: R1A1 FAL NOW WITH PICTURES!
Nice! I'm looking into one of these right now. I've already got the ammo, so what the heck.
You see in this world there are two kinds of people my friend, those with loaded guns... and those who dig. You dig.
Re: R1A1 FAL NOW WITH PICTURES!
I figured out the gas system as well, took a little bit but had no problems. Ive only shot one mag through it (all the ammo I had) but I liked it alot.

Didn't see the question about the gas system, it's been so long since I shot the FAL that I forget, but with the rifle in hand it would come back to me. I see you have it figured out

Re: R1A1 FAL NOW WITH PICTURES!
It's a bit of a tricky gas system to take apart but once I figured it out it wasn't too bad. The adjustable gas system kind of threw me for a loop too. I thought that the higher the number the more gas was retained in the system but that is not the case with the inch rifle! Turns out the higher the number the more gas that is let out of the system. So a bit of an oops right there, might explain some of the malfunctions it was having.
Re: R1A1 FAL NOW WITH PICTURES!
Very nice target, I particularly like the old style long flash suppressor, it is the iconic look of the FAL in its early African years!
You have absolutely got to put wood on that one now! The adjustable gas system is a great feature and will allow you to safely shoot a wider range of commercial ammo without battering the mechanism. Be sure you check out the FAL Files link I gave you, the information on that board is impressive. (Almost as much knowledge and info as we have here on Mosins!
) You may also need to search out some Rhodesian and South African web gear and utilities for display.

Re: R1A1 FAL NOW WITH PICTURES!
I'd love to put wood on this rifle, I guess it depends primarily on how much I can sell this current stock set for. If I get what I am asking for this whole set then I should be able to get a decent looking walnut set on it.
I went and joined the FALfiles. Seems like a good group to be able to help me solve any problems I might have with this rifle.
