I just picked up a Russian SKS, but it's missing the original receiver cover. Is there any way to tell what year it is based off the markings on the side? I'm not too familiar with the Russian SKSs.
Hard to tell but it is an n with a backward R 444

Re: Identification Help
Looks to me like it has a BBQ paint bolt cover under that dohickey there. There will be a date on the top of that cover likely if it hasn't been bubba'd worser. Looks like it is out of stock too. Good deal to pick up a russian though. I needs one myself.

Re: Identification Help
Since you do not have the original receiver cover, I doubt anything can be determined.
But, I see one thing of concern to seriously look at.
These after market scope receiver covers have to have the "tips" at the front filed very carefully to fit them. But, have to fit tightly.
On picture two it appears that one may have been filed beyond repair. Both sides may appear as this side does. Damage may have already occurred to your receiver.
Perhaps it is just the camera angle, but I don't think so. Personally, myself, if that is as bad as it appears I would not shoot it until I investigated for any receiver damage and bought a new receiver cover for it. No use taking any chances.
