Fred, it looks to me like your 47 case has a bit rounder curves at the break points (main body to shoulder and shoulder to neck). That causes the neck to look a bit longer on the 70s case. However the over all case lengths look the same.

I would think if this were to cause a problem, it would be hard chambering rather than hard extraction since normally they head space on the rim and the cases free float in the chamber.

If the 47 cartridges chamber ok, they will fire-form to the chamber pretty much to the same dimensions that the 70's will. So I think your extraction problem is caused by something else.

BTW my 65 Czech silvertip is a pretty close dimension match to the 47 Russian factory 188 that I recently got:

You can tell this ammo is really getting out there as more stripper clips are appearing on EBay with "1947" dates associated with them.

I want to order some, but there is no shipping to MA

Yes, the OAL of the case is the same. But the older ammo's neck is longer than the newer. I am sure I am not using the correct terminology. Agree also about chambering being more difficult than extraction. Odd. Not sure why the ammo is so hard to extract after firing. I shot some of the other ammo I had yesterday, zero problems. Really more like a tight bolt than a real problem with extraction.

Cool and when they come look at the fasteners on the crate handles to see if they're like the ones I'm describing below. Oh and the ammo I'm describing below came from SGAmmo I believe but it's all coming from the same source overseas as far as I know.

Ok guys here's something to look for on your crates. Some users in another forum pointed out that the handles on their crate were fastened with spent 7.62x54R shells instead of nails. You heard that right. His stuff is 1946 and it's factory 188. I looked at all 3 of mine and mine are nailed. I don't remember what the crate that Fred_G has was but I think it's the same. Now I wonder what's behind this, shortages maybe? I mean spent shells as nails. These pictures below are one of the users crates. These are not my crates and the pictures are shared with his permission.

Interesting Weldon. My case handles are nailed. Creative touch, using the spent cases as nails.

That's actually pretty cool.

I actually want to see if any of my LGS get this stuff in. They usually source their ammo through mail order places and then sell by the 20-pack, or jack up the price of a crate.

I just want a few rounds to collect. So hoping I can find a 20-pack.

I'd feel bad blasting 40's dated ammo. If I bought a crate...I'd save the entire thing and not shoot any!

I believe this shipment was spoken for by 4 specific vendors. None of which is near Boston if that's where you are. That doesn't mean some of it won't make it's way there. There's supposd to be 15 more containers of this coming and I believe you'll see a bunch more around the country so maybe some will make to a LGS near you. I just told Sam about it and he hadn't noticed it. His response when I told him was Cool Stuff!! lol.

I'd order some myself but none of the vendors will ship ammo to MA.

So short of asking a friend in a neighboring state, my only hope is to hope some trickles to an LGs eventually.

Now I will have to buy a crate of the stuff just to see if I get one like this :)

Hell, even the Albanians could afford nails for their crates. :)

I bet they are not being used as nails. Probably the cartridge case is sawed off a 1/4 inch or so from the rim and driven in.

Maybe for "quick identification" as someone said but the lettering on the front of the wood box would be quick enough it would seem.

Maybe just someone bored at a storage facility looking for something to do.

SA1911a1 - this would be something that would be easy to fake.

So has anyone else ordered this stuff... And have you tried out the ammo yet??? A variety of reports on the ammo would be great. :vcool:

Maybe there was a high illiteracy rate among Soviet conscripts at the time .

Yeah. They probably could not read the "Don't mess around with the ammo crates" signs.
