Globe sighting with a PU

Post by Mantis »

Has anyone tried using the globe cover on the front iron sight to find POA with PU?
I didn't have the grand kids with me today to distract me and I found something that works on a PU scope every time. Every single time.
I thought there was a smudge at the bottom of the scope glass and just sort of ignored it, I was having a lot of trouble hitting anything consistent. The mountain, I could hit the mountain. A lot was the trigger  I was finally able to get a reasonable grouping. I put a roll pin in the trigger before this outing, helped a bunch didn't hurt a thing.

For some reason when using the PU scope I focused on the target a little more than the post. Today I did it right and focused on the post letting the target blur, and there in the bottom of the scope was a mirage of the front sight, plane as day. I lined the blade up with the post splitting the globe and I put the very tip of the post, there is a little hair on mine on target. 100 m is the width of a man shoulder to shoulder in the horizontal gap of the PU, the range finder. Gotta leave them home more
Putting the front blade on the post splitting the globe put the horizontal bars in the correct position, they are tilted a bit and this puts them over the center of the bore. That's my guess and more than likely I read it.
This was my problem the horizontals aren't supposed to be flat there is a small angle and that angle moves the POA. The post moves in an arc.
At 100 yards, kid ain't there to shag paper I could hold my thumb over a grouping of 4 shots. 147 milsurp CZ silvertip 1 was a flyer and it was my fault. The following groups were that consistent within a 1/2inch and I am convinced if it was farther it was me. I was able to shoot of my knee use the cross leg 'sniper sit' and a standing off hand able to hit target, around 18in, left by someone out to a measured 210 yards. I feel no recoil using off hand.
Thought I would share I am sure 99% of you know this, but maybe it helped one. I can not stress how much this help my groupings. It makes it SO easy to aim now I am just amazed :vcool: I am going on I know if you haven't tried it load up hit the range. Let some one say a Mosin is not accurate, I read it all the time. Maybe it's the shooter :chuckles:

You can sight in a scope that way, or pull the bolt and sight down the bore itself. This is were a bore sighter comes in handy but with the design of the PU, the scope sitting so high you have to use A extension on the arbor to bring the sighter to the correct level, and they are a pain in the ass.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

I '0'd my Sig DMR first because I knew the rifle and had very little problem. IT took me forever yo fet any sort of group the last time out and I expected the same thing this time. But the SOB was going home '0'd or it was gonna get dark first.
The rifle was pretty close to dead on in windage, it was elevation. I set the elevation at 100 meters and shot at the bottom of the silhouette. It seemed to hit about where I was aiming so I just worked at it. My POA is the neck area after I am 0'd, it works for hitting center mass for me. Aim small miss small. I was shooting around on the target my groupings were fair and that is being nice about. Then I saw the front sight in the scope picture, the blade of the front sight was off to the right about the width of the globe. I tilted the rifle to the left to line the blade up. A hole appeared right of the hollow of the neck. It was on, had a 7 gust to 10 from the ESE, from my 4 One more windage adjustment that was it. The groups closed to 1 inch @ 100 meters. I left the elevation setting mark at 100 not moving it to the '0' From then on the PU was a joy to shoot. I moved the elevation to a smidgen over 200m hit, target was 215 yds. It seemed I couldn't miss anything that was at least 18 inches wide. It was a good day at the range. My 43 44 Tula PUs come tomorrow. I am ready for them now
