Stick around long enough in this game and nothing you see done to a firearm will surprise you anymore, or a car for that matter.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Nope... Martin hasn't brought it over to my house yet....Junk Yard Dog wrote:Have you shot this one yet Ron?
That's why I had to buy my own. But that will be going on the next range trip along with my 33 Tula.

Stopped that 20 years ago, I didn't want to be one of those guys with uncontrollable hand tremors, I have enough problems hitting the target as it is
Tea, always tea, and straight tea, even before I had to give up the sugar I took it straight, or sometimes Russian style with lemon.

Re: M91/38 Came In Yesterday
No range trips with this one yet. It's just sittin' purdy with my other carbines.
Point to note. I'm glad that I bought this one when I did. There have only been a couple more opportunities to place an M91/38 in the collection since, and the pricing was astronomical.
So, collectors, if you see one, need one, and it isn't over $450, then it might be time to snag one. They aren't very prevalent on the secondary market anymore.
Don't want you to have the jitters, JYD. Are you sure it isn't caused by something that you might have drank the night before?

No words of wisdom come to mind at this time....
Re: M91/38 Came In Yesterday
I have never seen in the skin an 91/38 in a cut down M91 or even 91/30 stock, they have all been in M44 stocks. I am betting big time that this rifle had a very thick coating of rust on it at some time that was cleaned off by scraping it. I have done the same thing to a very valuable rifle in my collection using an older nickel (which had nickel in it) scraping with the edge to remove a large thickness of rust. Mine came out for the most part better looking than that one did other than at certain spots where it looks very much like that rifle. I was told about the nickel method by a very old fellow who made flint locks for a living, if I said his name you would know him so I won't. I will simply say he knows every trick in the book and a few that aren't yet in the book. This nickel trick is a desperation trick so don't try it unless there is no alternative and then leaving it alone maybe better in the long run. I was dang lucky in that my rifle showed a bit of blue left under the rust and I continued scraping and wiping with Kroil Oil. Unless I point out the areas that look like that and mention the rifle came to me without a hand guard you might not spot the results for what has been done. Now there is nothing wrong with that look it has, matter of fact I like it, and I doubt with how hard those are to find these days it would effect the value at all but I am still almost sure that look is a result of nickel scraping to remove rust. Nice rifle for sure even with that and awful hard to find these days. Dang if I don't remember those being sold as odd ball M44's by someone for I think $79! Dang Dog with all that talk about the golden days and all I am getting philosophical here! Bill

Seems I have a little blood sugar problem, the only things I can drink now are water and plain tea. I can have the tea hot or cold howevermartin08 wrote:No range trips with this one yet. It's just sittin' purdy with my other carbines.

Re: M91/38 Came In Yesterday
Bill, in 1994 I bought a Finn M38 carbine for fifty bucks. M24 cost me under a hundred, SAFN 49 was $150, and several Garands for $175-$200, M1 carbines, all of them original USGI for $150-$175 each, Finn 91/30 for $45. Just to recall a few, it was a golden time.

Re: M91/38 Came In Yesterday
My 91/38 is an 1897 dated Tula. I got it off of a guy that didn't know what he had. It's in awesome shape! The bore on this carbine is the best ive ever seen on a Mosin! Hard to believe on a 115 year old rifle! Out off all of the Mosins I have it's my oldest and best shooter. Let's just say I got for a song! A very cheap one at that! Also got 3 440rnd sealed tins of ammo with it! All numbers match! The only thing that is force matched is the bolt which is a later Ishvsek, along with the magazine floor plate. Enjoy fellas.

Re: M91/38 Came In Yesterday
As Martin stated... If you find a nice 91/38 for under $450 jump on it. I still recall that "Grey Blanket" auction for a 91/38 selling for $4,000???? or was it $2,000? Crazy...
