How do you clean your sks

Post by Bkloes »

Hey so I joined this forum because I bought a Mosin, but I have been branching out into the other sections. I have started pouring hot water through my SKS after shooting corrosive ammo as suggested for my Mosin. I assume it works as well with a SKS but do you also do something with the gas chamber? I will tell you each time I take apart both rifles the Mosin grows on me....less moving parts!!

One other thing, I have heard of idiot marks on pistols....am I missing something or are those little levers that hold the gas tube and back "receiver" plate in place hard to get off without a small arch shaped scratch.

Hey Bkloes, yes you make scratches while moving the levers. Sounds like you are doing fine. I also just picked up a type 56 sks. I haven't used corrosive ammo but it stands to reason that cleaning the bore would be the same as with the mosin. As far as the gas tube I would suggest using ammonia based cleaner and use your cleaning kit our a brush to brush it out and then oil all of it very lightly. Also make sure to clean your bolt and bolt carrier.lightly oil or you will get a face full of oil, don't ask how I know. After the hot water I just clean my rifles with solvent and them oil. I'm sure there will be someone along with some pearl of wisdom. Welcome to the forum.

I do clean the gas chamber but not with water. I use oil or hoppes or what ever and clean the piston good. Is it a russian or chinese, or is it a yugo. The russian and chinese should have the chrome bore but the yugo would need the hot water as it is not chromed. It is ok to do the hot water on the others too though. :D

Just a very very thin coat of oil on the SKS gas piston. No excessive dripping or over oiling, bordering on dry, same thing inside of the gas tube. There is just a chance of excessive pressure there from burning oil/lube :o , if not, it will just make a black sticky mess :x .

Don't look at those marks as "idiot marks", it means you take care of it, and normal. They are a robust weapon, like the Mosin, enjoy it

Yeah the SKS was actually the first one I got....it had a composite stock but I got a found a wood one and refinished it all really nice:) Now my girlfriend says its her rifle :chuckles: It is a Norinco chrome barrel.....Its in great condition I don't think it was used much before I got it. Brad, I should have known you would have one of these ones too:) So it sounds like I need to clean out that gas chamber each time as well....I sorta figured that would be the case:)

Thanks guys:)

My 1st semi-auto Milsurp was a t56 SKS with a 30 Round Magazine that I still have. Before I joined this Forum I put A synthetic stock and scope on it with an adjustable stock. I waistedthe time and money on the conversion thinking it would look cool but the truth is I prefer the wood stock I put back on. I added a 2" shoulder pad extension which helped it fit my arm length for a fraction the cost of the adjustable stock.Live and learn. Cleaning is like they said  JGC

My SKS came with a 20 rd mag and a bipod. I bought a spike bayo to replace the bipod but have never found the mag yet. :D
