They were prepared to fight from under every rock, and behind every tree, from children to the oldest elder. Some of the people they saved were members of my own family who were serving at the time, the Jap home islands would have been Okinawa times a hundred. They had nothing to be ashamed of, I am not a believer in revisionist history, we were lucky to get the bomb first, both the Japanese and the Germans had been trying for it. The Japanese unleashed biological weapons in china killing tens of thousands of people just to see what the effects would be, they would not have hesitated a second before using the Bomb should they have gotten it first.
if it wasn't for their deeds, America and Japan would have just exhausted each other into non-existence for sure and some other nation could have just walked in and took ownership. Just like immediately after the Civil War the nations ability to defend and supply was so weak there was fear that we would have been adopted with out a struggle.

No, we would have destroyed them, there is no question about that, their industry was in ruins, their Navy mostly at the bottom of the sea, their air force was down to suicide pilots. We had a huge army in Europe that was ready to rotate to the Pacific, the USSR had a huge army that was coming down on them from Siberia. Japan had no hope of victory bomb or no, what they would have done was inflict heavy casualties on US troops attempting to take the home islands, but take them we would have.

Yea, If it had not been for guys like the "Heroes Of Telemark"that destroyed the German's heavy water plant and then sank the the ferry boat full of all their stockpile of remaining heavy water in Denmark ,we would have been on the receiving end.Even after that, the Germans were still only a little short of enough to make at least a few atomic V-2 rocket bombs..Part luck, mostly raw guts and bravery. not to doubt the boys abilities but the Japs had their ways of evening up the odds and it would have showed had we stepped upon their shores.

The Japanese were prepared to die, American soldiers wanted to live , if it had gone badly enough at the start we would have gotten medieval, possibly even deploying the same sort of chemical and biological weapons the Japanese had used against the Chinese.

Johnston Island ,about 1000 miles SW of Hawaii was stockpiled to the max.with biological and chemical weapons during the end of WWII for the purpose of hitting Japan if we had to. This is true.WE were were totally prepared to use all of it to stop the war and save lives. Had the bomb failed, we were not going to hesitate ,The war had to stop before Japan or Germany could do the same to us first, which was a real possibility. The casualty predictions to invade Japan were horrendous for all sides. More millions would die. JGC

Japan did attempt to do the same to us using a variety of devices launched from Japan using balloons. I believe it was some sort of smallpox, fortunately the delivery device didn't work as planned. Under today's guidelines that would constitute an attack on the US using a weapon of mass destruction and would be met with a nuclear response.

A History Channel on land mines said they will never find many of the thousands of land mines used. All over the world. Showed pictures of people that had found them the hard way. I wonder if we will ever learn?

I know this is an old post, but found some thing you guys that may have 1017 Eddystone may be interested in. I stopped by tmy
old Military Shop and had only a few minutes, but found inside of an old box this. One full box and 1 about 3/4 full of Military hand guards in the ORIGINAL old cardboard thin boxes. Marked as for .30 Cal 1917 Eddystone. I do not think I have seen walnut as perfect as these. Everyone looks the same basically. Appears little if any oils on the wood. Just freaking gorgeous. There are quite a bunch of them per box!

If anyone is interested in getting a hold of them, PM me and I will try to help get them from Gerald. These gotta be worth some thing these days.
Total perfection is what these are and from US Military stocks. All original boxes and labeling.

How could you forget such a beauty? That's like having an old pretty girl friend call you up but you can't remember her name.

Jim you suck. You just have to go and make us all jealous as hell.
“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
