Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
For those of you looking for a non-corrosive 7.62x54r alternative, I orderd some of these from AIM surplus and they arrived today (along with a spam can of surplus Bulgarian). This ammo is made by the same 188 factory that produced a lot of the surplus ammo from the 70's in Russia. However, this is non-corrosive, copper-washed steel case ammo currently produced. I am anxious to try it in one my guns next trip to the range.

Unfortunately, when I went to post this link, I noticed that they are currently sold out. Hopefully, they will get more. Here is the company that makes the cartridge:

Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

another place to get non-corrosive ammo is cabelas. I got some Herters brand fmj steel cased there for under $8 for a box of 20 when it was on sale. Not sure what the price is now.

Now days just about every supplier has some sort of non corrosive 7.62x54r, Tula ammo, Brown Bear, and so on, selection is improving.

Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
The thing I like about this ammo is that it is just like the surplus ammo without the normal headstamp and with new non-corrosive primers (still berdan primed). It is copper-washed steel case with headstamp that reads LVE - 11 - 7.62x54r. It is really cool looking and packed in paper and a small cardboard box, much like some surplus ammo I have seen (Bulgarian). I'll try to post some pics later.

Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
It's good to see they are finally making it without the corrosive primers.
For me, if I get any non-corrosive 7.62x54 it will only be Brass & Boxer primed so I can reload them (When I find time). For now I have plenty of surplus to keep me happy.

Here's a picture of the stuff; I'm trying to find a source other than AIM because they are sold out.

The-Armory has it but it's quite a bit more. http://www.the-armory.com/shopsite_sc/s ... .html#1786tjtM38 wrote:Here's a picture of the stuff; I'm trying to find a source other than AIM because they are sold out.
I can ask Bryan when he thinks they'll get more if you want.

Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
I'm finding more of it. Ammunition Store has it and it's a bit more reasonable. http://www.ammunitionstore.com/products ... d-box.html Not quite what AIM had it for but way better than The-Armory. I'll post if I find a better deal. Meanwhile they'll be here in the list if anyone wants to compare them. http://gun-deals.com/ammo.php?caliber=7.62x54R
Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
I have seen some of this stuff but they want an arm and a leg for it. Like $13 a box. It is just papered 20s put in abox and then the priced was raised as near as i can tell. Maybe it is just here though.

Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
That may be true but these are supposed to be non-corrosive primed. If AIM has them listed that way I'd trust they are. If they aren't Bryan will catch hell from the guys at the arfcom forum for sure. Personally I'll pay less for corrosive surplus and pour boiling water down the barrel. As far as I can see other than the primer being different it's the same ammo. It may not be steel core but it has a bi-metal jacket.desdem12 wrote:I have seen some of this stuff but they want an arm and a leg for it. Like $13 a box. Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
I didn't pay any attention to the non corrosive. I opened a box and it has the paper cover with the staples. It could be non corrosive but the price of it makes it worthless. You can't reload it and it is 2wice the other ammo. Not worth it in my eyes when you can get privi for a little more and it is brass and reloadable. I think this is just a opportunity someone thought they could capitalize on and make a fast double the buck. just my opinion though. All ammo has gone up but i see no difference in this then the surplus and for the better part of a 20 i can just use hot water. Of course i am a cheapo.

Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
Yeah I hear ya. I'm the original cheapo, besides Jim and that's only because he's a little older than me. Been that way since I was a wee lad. My mother was amazed when I was ten years old and took a hotwheel car I'd bought at the Woolworths across the street for an exchange because something was wrong with it. I don't own any ammo other than Surplus for the Mosins. Then again that was all I could find for the first one 12 years ago. No one sold ammo in any of the stores in California where I lived. Heck most didn't even know what a Mosin Nagant was. I was lucky to find a tin of it at the only gunshow I've ever been to for $20. I'm still shooting out of that same tin believe it or not.desdem12 wrote:I didn't pay any attention to the non corrosive. I opened a box and it has the paper cover with the staples. Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
I agree with the posts here; it's just something new I ran into on AIM's site. I actually was ordering a spam can of Bulgarian surplus when I saw this, so I bought five boxes just to see what it was. It really looks just like the surplus ammo from the 188 factory that I have been shooting; just new non-corrosive priming and 2011 manufacture date as opposed to the 1970's stuff I have been shooting. I don't reload a lot of 7.62x54r but I am using Privi Partisan and Winchester brass when I get around to it.

Hey there's nothing wrong with non-corrosive. I suspect one day it's all that'll be available and surplus will be one of those things we say "remember when?". I don't think that's going to happen anytime soon. I'd be cautious though. There's been a rash of new ammo coming in that's the same as the surplus in everyway and all of it's been in white generic boxes that state it's russian and non corrosive. Some like the Klimovsk is labled as such but all of it so far was imported by Wolf which doesn't make ammo but contracts with the russain manufacturers to make ammo for them to import under the Wolf name. They even have some made by Lapua. Bryan at AIM's supplier is Wolf and he's had some of the other calibers also and some people raised the possiblity, well more than the possibility it may be corrosive. Some actually did tests on some of it and showed results consistant with corrosive ammo. Bryan as well as a few other vendors including Wolf did testing of their own and came to the conclusion none of it was corrosive. I'd just say be careful. I basically treat all ammo is if it's corrosive. I hate surprises and I know first hand what corrosive ammo can do.

Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
Actually tj, the original price that made you post this, 7.95 per box, is in fact a very good deal for new non-corrosive, it's just the reason that it sold out so fast.
Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
I would buy some to try at the 7.95. They just doubled the price for it here. There isn't too much for ammo for a mosin here so they take advantage as much as they can. There are never any spams. I usually order them.

Yea, hot water is a pain but cheap. I just wait and shoot several at a time so I can clean them all together. Now that I have corrosive pistol ammo too I have gotten a system for cleaning thanks to the tips from you guys. It's not to bad anymore, but I used to struggle before I learned the best ways to do it, Thanks for your help!

Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
AIM has it back in stock.
Re: Non-Corrosive 7.62x54r
Yeah; they sent me an email reminder. I'm thinking about ordering a little more while they have it for 7.95 a box. I shot a box of it on Sunday and was very pleased with the results. I just like the fact that it is factory new. It won't drive me away from surplus ammo because the price will never equal the value you get with surplus.WeldonHunter wrote:AIM has it back in stock.
Update: I ordered 10 boxes of this ammo and 10 boxes of 9 x 18 Makarov made by the same factory. Aim now appears to have good stocks of each.
