bullets for reloading

Post by countryboy3006 »

where is the best place to get bullets for a M91/30. I have looked in a few places and all I can find is .308 caliber bullets not .310. I would like to find FMJ and maybe some soft point or other bullets I can use for hunting.

Look for bullets listed for the .303 british caliber. Another one you might find is the heavier bullets for the 7.62x39. The pickings are slim here too. You can order them but that gets expensive for shipping :D

I had my dealer order Hornady 174 GR FMJ with a bullet diameter of .3105. I'm using this bullet for the Russian Mosin Nagants and my two Enfilelds. I have had good luck using this bullet in both the .303 Brit and 7.62x54r. These cost me about $38 for a box of 100, so at retail they are not cheap.

Ok I am suer there will be one or two that have a problem with this but. Load a few 308 up and test at the range. My rifle will shoot a 308 as well as a 311. I dont run rounds real hot as there is just no need for a deer. Give it a try the old rifle may just show you something good. cgillette

Grafs and Sons usually has the less expensive Priva bullets in stock. I use .311 diameter in my 91/30's and my M39 Finns but the 174 grain Hornady is a nice bullet my M39s like it a lot. I also shoot a lot Sierra and Speer in 150 grain SP. These seem to shoot really well at 100 yards, fact is I shoot them all in my Lee Rifles also.

Here is some news for you tj, at Graf's you can get the Hornady 150 gr flat base bullets for about 23 bucks/100. If you are shooting at 100 yards or perhaps out to 150 yards, you owe it to yourself to try the flat bottom bullets from Hornady or Sierra. You may find that the boattail bullets are actually less accurate than flat bottom bullets at 100. The bt bullets really shine much better at 200+ yds.
About shooting .308 bullets in the Mosins- this is exactly what Kari Prager did tell me and others on a regular basis. He proved it to himself and shot jacketed Sierra. .308 flat bottom 150 gr bullets in his Russian and Finn rifles all the time. He learned through trial and experimentation of course and found no ill effects from doing so. I think it is a sad thing that we don't still have Kari here with us. I still miss him a year and a half after he died. I tell my wife he was my friend that I never met.

I went back and found the picture of Kari at his California range with his signature boxes of handloaded cartrides. I seriously doubt that he ever fired factory ammunition unless shooting match 22 LR in his target pistols.
