Post by Burrhead »

Thanks, good info to have, the man likes his Unique, I happen to have a good amount of this powder on hand, just got yet another pound of it with the last ammo haul and was wondering what to do with it.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

There is a web site called "Cast Boolits" that is a wealth of info on casting and loading. Lots of guys shoot lead through their Mil-Surps so this is a good source of info. here is their site info http://castboolits.gunloads.com/
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Recently picked up a copy of Lyman's Cast Bullet Handbook (4th edition). Wealth of information on casting bullets plus loading data.
A Veteran-whether active duty or retired-is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount of "up to and including my life". That is Honor, and there are way too many people in this country who no longer understand it.

Yes the Lyman is a really good read if you are interested in casting your own bullets. I cast for my Sharps, Vetterli, and my Rolling Block 43 Spanish. If I ever get off my lazy butt I plan to d the same for some of my 30 caliber rifles and my 8mm mausers. There is some real good information on shooting cat bullets with pistol powder on the net. I am also trying smokeless in my Sharps and the Rolling block. I use Accurate Arms 5744 in my Vetterli all the time.

All Lyman manuals have info on bullet casting and some limited load data for each caliber they make bullet molds for or they can be used with. The Lyman Cast Bullet Manuals are solely dedicated to cast bullets only and have a much broader range of powder and bullets to select from. The 3rd. Edition covers only Lyman bullets the new 4th. Edition covers Lyman molds as well as some selected Lee and RCBS molds.

I started casting bullets back in my early 20's for my Ruger BH 357/9mm convertible stopped for about 25 yrs. and got back into it several years ago when I picked up a couple SKS rifles,Sav. 99 in 300 Sav. Mosin M44,Long Branch 303,Sav. 30-30 and a few other handguns,it's lots cheaper to feed them free lead bullets for the most part instead of copper J bullets although I do slap a gas check on them occasionally when I want to shoot near or at factory velocity or in my gas operated SKS rifles.

I shot a lot of pistol and shotgun powder with cast bullet loads,Alliant 2400 and Red Dot are two of my favorites for the majority of my Military calibers. I shot a lot of Red Dot plinker and small game loads in my 30-30,for hunting loads in the 30-30 and other rifle when I want to push the MV up close to factory I go with regular rifle powders but that's about all they get used for. No need to waste a whole case full of powder and beat your old shoulder up just to punch some paper, steel plates or small game for that matter you really don't need to hit factory velocity with cast bullets to kill larger game cleanly.

what load data I use that I haven't gotten from the Lyman manuals I gleaned for the various writing of C.E. Harris or Ed Harris as some know him by who wrote the NRA Cast Bullet Manuals, developed the Ed's Red homemade bore cleaner formula as well as Worked for Ruger. Mr. Harris is still alive and well and post on occasion on the CBA Forum and has helped me quiet a bit over the years.

Several of his writing on cast bullet load data that I have used for many years now as well as several other links.
