WOOD STOCK FOR CHINESE SKS

Post by taylorcraftbc65 »

Hey guys, I have an SKS that I won in a poker game. It shoots very well, but the guy that I won it from is the poster boy for Rambo wannabees. He took a perfectly good wooden stock and threw it in the trash because it didn't look cool, and replaced it with a dorky plastic side folding stock that is real tough to get a decent stock weld on for me, and inpossible for my sweetie pie.
I would like to replace it with the original design wood stock, and have NO idea WHERE to buy one. It is a Chinese rifle if that makes a difference. These rifles make excellent Whitetail guns if left stock.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Brie

Gunbroker has a pile of them listed, a quick glance showed them selling, generally, in the $40.00 range.

Lots of Chinese stock of SKS's around. Many of the rifles were not military rifles and don't carry the responsibility of try to keeep the rifle "as is" . Sort of like buying a Rem 700 and changing things. It OK. So the Chinese SKS that were made by Norinko were fair game. So you will see a good selection on Gunbroker and even on Ebay.

Brie, is it a standard SKS or is it a Paratrooper? The Paratrooper is the shorter length rifle and was made only for the commercial market by China before it was cutoff from import.

Good morning Dolk, The rifle has a bottom folding bayonett, and I measured the barrel from where it screws into the reciever to it's tip, and it is 19 3/4 inches long. the serial number is 10241037, and the bolt carrier, bottom of the trigger guard, and bottom of the magazine are stamped 41037.
On the left side of the receiver is stamped (From left to right), a triangle with, from what I can see above the stock, two other triangles inside it, then three Chinese charachters, then the serial number.
On the right side of the receiver is stamped MADE IN CHINA 7.62X39 INTERSTATE ARMS BILLERICA MA
I hope that helps in identifying the rifle better. I really like them, they make wonderful Whitetail in the woods rifles. Their impact ballistics are virtually identical to the venerable .30-30, and not having a tubular magazine, I can load them with spitzer bullets.
The only thing that this rifle needs is a original wood stock to make it a fine "military" hunting rifle.

That would be great Rongoman, the original wood top handguard is still on this rifle. What would it take to separate you from the stock?

Let me dig it up, snap some pics, I'll PM the pics to you & we will discuss the price. I'm thinking around $40 shipped??? I think it still has the buttplate on it too. I might have a spare Norinco cleaning rod as well.

Let me know what you think after seeing pictures.

Brie,
I will measure my Paratrouper" shortly but, here isa photo of it (a bad one, but!) They are easy to tell from a regular SKS. Note the short distance from the muzzle to the beginning of the gas tube. That's the difference.

Mine has a slip on butt extension on it. It's made for a very small guy!

From the looks of your photograph, the distance from the front of the recoil piston housing to the back of the ring for the bayonet lug, is twice as long on ours, as it is on yours.
I guess that means that we have a military rifle, instead of the civilian "Paratrooper" model.

The distance from the back of our recoil spring cover on the upper receiver to the front of the metal cup that the front of the lower stock fits into is 18 inches.

Brie,

Got the stock out of the rafter & took some pics. For kicks I checked E-Bay & was amazed to see a bunch much nicer than mine for very cheap. I would look there first.

Here's a few...

SKS stockset, sling & cleaning rod

2 days left... $1.04

Good luck!!!

Brie,
Just because it is a longer SKS, doesn't mean it is military. They made "sporting rifles" and military rifles in the longer versions.

But if it's longer, then it will be easier to find a stock for it like Ron has shown you. There were a lot of the longer models made.

I forget...Was their a difference in the Paratrooper stocks? If I recall correctly the only difference is the barrel is shorter past the wood on a Paratrooper.... Otherwise the stocks are the same?

I may have to dig them out of the safe for comparison...

Well I was off... But came down with the flu. 14 hours of overtime this week & been very busy so sorry for the delay. Got my modest SKS family out & sure enough, the stocks are the same.

Sorry to get into this conversation late. But before you buy a stock, it is important to know a few details.

First, is your gun configured with a long collar threaded barrel, short collar threaded barrel, or a pressed/pinned barrel? The distance from the rear of the receiver to the front crossbolt is different for these three variations.

Secondly, the bayonet grooves can vary for blade vs. spiked bayonet, and standard vs. paratrooper length for both blade or spike versions.

Lastly, and of no importance for fitting. There would be a choice between side or bottom mounted sling swivels.

In other words - the SKS stocks are not a One-Fits-All installment by any means. By the sounds of your rifle, taylorcraft, it is the standard length 20-1/12" barrel (measured from chamber face to muzzle). If it is a factory /26\ model, then the 10million serial number range would have the short lug threaded barrel and a spike bayonet. The correct stock will also have a short bayonet groove for the spike model.

If you'd like to be sure your new stock fits, your specific configuration would need to be determined. And then I could help with providing the correct dimensions that are needed to avoid headaches. LMK if I can help.
No words of wisdom come to mind at this time....
