Re: M1 Carbine
750 rounds for a lifetime of M1 carbine shooting? Good luck with that

Re: M1 Carbine
I heard a story once that an M-1 carbine could not penetrate a Korean soldiers winter uniform. The pleated multi-layer very thick kind you see in the movies. The cook that told me that story said he switched to a Tommy gun .45 cal. because the small .30 cal. just could not do the job. True or false I wonder?
Re: M1 Carbine
Gorgeous M1 you got there.
Re: M1 Carbine
I heard that, too, Jolly. I plan on grabbing my Garand in winter... if need be
Thanks ktu.
I just bumped into what looks like a nice United Postal Meter one on someone's site... less than 700 even. Good by today's standards. Sling and oiler included.

Re: M1 Carbine
Probably not, I have seen the .30 carbine penetrate a car door fully and make a mess on the opposite door from 50 yards so I don't think cotton in layers a man would wear would be a problem for it. That car was a '77 Ford LTD, real metal.Jolly Green Chopper wrote:I heard a story once that an M-1 carbine could not penetrate a Korean soldiers winter uniform. The little 30 caliber tokarev is supposed to go through body armor so why not that one? I would think false too.

Not sure any clothing is going to stop a metal case bullet traveling out the muzzle at 1900 FPS. I'm thinking there are many desceased Japanese, North Korean and Chinese souls who wish they had never encountered the little carbine.Junk Yard Dog wrote:Probably not, I have seen the .30 carbine penetrate a car door fully and make a mess on the opposite door from 50 yards so I don't think cotton in layers a man would wear would be a problem for it. Re: M1 Carbine
I imagine the 30 carbine has pretty much the same stigma as the .380acp. There are certainly better rounds out there, but I wouldn't want to be shot with either.

Re: M1 Carbine
At the time of it's first issue it was being compared to the M1 Garand, not a good comparison as the two rifles had different missions. The carbine was to have been issued to rear area types who needed to be armed but were not expected to be in front line combat, or officers who chose to carry it in favor of a pistol. Many did end up on the front lines, they were light, had a decent rate of fire, were quick to reload and at least as powerful as the 9mm Mp40's many Germans carried, later in the war they were even updated to the M2 full auto. If used within it's original design parameters then the carbine is just fine, try to pull a 6000 yard shot with it, or shoot through a log wall and you will run into trouble.

Re: M1 Carbine
Speaking of Germans, they loved the M-1 carbine and would capture and use as many as they could .The tank crews and the officers really liked them . Hitler was very stubborn about change and did not think the infantry needed more than the K98 but changed his mind when he saw the MP-43 late in the war.My World Encyclopedia of Rifles says had the German trials boards in the 1930' s been acted on,Germany could have had the whole army equipped with the MP-43/STG44 for the duration of the war .JGC

We were very lucky Hitler made so many decisions for the German Army, the mad was an idiot.

Yea you'r right he was mad and an idiot. They say he was addicted to Meth. with many IV injections per day. When the Soviets found out how bad he was they stopped trying to kill him knowing how incompetent he had become. The stupid mistakes he was making helped them win the war.

Re: M1 Carbine
I also read that Hitler kept the old Gewehr 98's around longer than his advisers wanted, even equipping his personal bodyguards with them. A throwback from his time in WWI maybe.

Whackjob, and it seems a stuck in the past whackjob. I have heard about his personal Doctor feelgood, to bad he didn't OD him before he started a war and killed tens of millions.

The history channel reported recently that he survived dozens of attempts on his life, and ended up with hundreds of body guards. Churchill had two bodyguards, one at a time. I don't know about Eisenhower for sure. I heard it was only a few.Who knows about Stalin? He was so paranoid nobody would dare go near him to even try a shot.JGC

Stalin had the NKVD protecting him, they numbered in the tens of thousands, they would kill anyone even thinking negative thoughts about Comrade Stalin. Hitler had the SS, also in the tens of thousands.

Re: M1 Carbine
Nice carbines Gents, and yes they have all been arsenal upgraded to post war specs, including safety and mag release. Not a draw back in my book at all.
As for the power of the .30 Carbine, if anyone questions its power, ask them to put a steel pot on their head, wrap a coil of heavy rope around there chest, then put on a quilted winter coat. Have them stand 200yds away and let them take a round in the chest. I think they will decline.
I had a huge wright up on this on the old forum, but it appears to be gone now. Don't let the .30 carbine round get a bad rap. I know there are stories from vets, but remember there is alot of confusion in combat and memory can play tricks on you. Add to that that it IS an FMJ round and the enemy may also have been hopped up on adrenalin (or something more potent) and a multitude of scenarios could take place.
