You guys wanna' see something cool?

Post by websterz »

How about a 1928 Izhevsk hex receiver, DOUBLE MO date, ex-sniper? Not just any ex-sniper either...this one is a GECO. I am working on the pics and will have them up shortly.

Here are the pics. First, the receiver:

The receiver date of 1928 matches the tang. You can see the MO and two dates, '46 and '53.

And the plugged mount holes, inside and out:

This rifle was purchased at a yard sale believe it or not. The guy was liquidating his small one-man shop and sold my buddy 5 MN's at a dirt cheap price...this is one of them. This rifle was later stolen, along with numerous other firearms, and subsequently recovered by police from a rural vacant lot where it had presumably been disposed of. Luckily the rust was cosmetic and I was able to undo 99% of the weather damage. The rifle is now in my safekeeping while I carefully try to undo the other 1%...and maybe take it out to the range.

Right next to the MO is the '53 date, the '46 is above that, after the receiver date.

WOW. Most don't even know of the GECO sniper, actually finding one is awesome, even if it's an ex-sniper.

He's the guy that can save you 15% on car insurance.

Other than that, all that I know is that it is an early side-mount sniper that used German optics.
No words of wisdom come to mind at this time....

Nice find, hard to see, light, lots of light when you take indoor pics, most camera flashes unless they are a SLR's hot shoe flash can't handle flash pics of a dark object indoors in low light. Lot of history in that rifle.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I will get some better pics. Those were the best I could manage last night.

Essentially this^^.

They were built off Dragoon rifles, and according to Vic, roughly 170 were made.

Like I said, even an ex-GECO sniper is very rare.

First, a very nice MN.

I am curious about the GECO part. Maybe someone could post a little more information of what and where the GECO sniper is or came from. I never heard of it before as it relates to MN's

In German it stands for Gustav Genschow & Co which made guns and ammo since about 1912. Now owned by another company but they still produce ammo with the GECO name. Have a 1919 GECO single shot .22 LR in fine condition and is very accurate. They were made for export to the U.S. and Canada.

Here's a link to get you started. It's in Russian, I used translator software but the pics will give you the idea. It shows the progresssion from the late 1920's (Zeiss, Walther then Geco) to the PU in the 1940's.

That web site gives dire warnings about malware so found another that gives quite a bit of information about Zeiss and GECO but to see the pictures you have to have a Gunboard account

Sorry for the warnings on the link, unintentional. Maybe your computer doesn't like it because it's a ".ru" link.

I started a new thread on my replica in the Sniper forum.

Great find! 8-) 8-)

I wonder what the crook thought of it... Considering where he stored it, not very much.
