Jap rifle question.

Post by millman »

What is the going rate for an Arisaka (I think that's what it is), in good shape, with the aircraft sights intact, and a bayonet? The mum looks to have been struck with a bayonet, in an x, but it is not ground. I don't collect these, but hate to pass on a deal. (if it is such)

That is a field struck MUM, done by the Japanese soldier when he fully expected to die shortly afterward, I had a dealer tell me yesterday he had one that he let go for $350 last month. anywhere up to $450 for an intact 99 with field struck Mum and in good shape.

Does the bayo add much? They want 350, which is more than is in the gun budget right now, but I could lay it away.

A nice, original Jap Arisaka bayonet can run a hundred bucks these days, like the rifles there are many different manufacturers who made them, some lower production that others.

Thanks JYD. If it is still there in a few days, I may have to put some $ down on it.

What type of arisaka is it? Type 99, 38, 35, 97? The bayonets can run $75-150ish, there are many variations of arisaka bayonet.

What JYD said, $350.00 is a pretty fair price these days for the rifle you described, with bayonet it would be a buy. Remember this when thinking Arisaka, most Arisaka's are vet bring backs, very few were imported in bulk, most stock piles of equipment and rifles destroyed by the allies after the war. Every single Japanese rifle brought back to the states represents and holds a place in our nations history. I say get them while you can.

Isn't the type 99 the only one that has aircraft sights?

Yes, and then only the early type 99's had them. The 99 was an innovative design with many new ideas like chrome bore and such, but as the war went on most of the new ideas were dropped to speed production, I think the AA sights went in late '42, or early '43, the first 99's were made in 1941.

I saw a very nice type 30 sell on GB a couple of weeks back, don't recall the price but it wasn't cheap.

I bought a box of Norma 7.7 Jap at a car show with a flint pistol several years back, I set it aside for use in the 99, and now the 99 is out and cleaned off, I can't find the box of ammo. Figures.

Williams sold one last week for $300 like you are talking about with the Mum intact an a really nice bore for $300. They have another one for less but I haven't looked at it. I hope to be over there today to take a peek at the 91/30 I posted about earlier. If you want I can look at it, after what happened to Rongo I am never recommending a rifle only on price. But here is a picture of the one that appears to be enact, they have a few more that are X-Bubba's. This one is $200 asking and I bet I can get this cheaper than that if I was to buy it myself.

I had the chance to buy one with a ground mum, but had the bayonet, dust cover and I'm not sure about the ac sights for $300. Kinda wish I did. I bought mine on GB for $180 run of the mil, ground mum. Nothing special, but it's cool to have. I saw a T38 Trainer today for $160 It struck my interest.

I don't know a lot about these rifles but I did look at this one and the Mum is ground completely off the receiver. The finish and bore other wise looks good, stock is in good shape and looks original to the rifle. I didn't see any rust anywhere on the weapon, heck I may go back and put something down on this one myself, I got an offer of $180 plus tax today from the guy I talked to.
