Finally arrived

Post by ttnc »

My new to me MN came in today. Have not taken the time to get it out of the box and start cleaning but saw a 1941 date on it. Not many markings on it that I can see yet but there is lots of cosmoline to clean. Have to read up on the tips you guys have posted then get to the task.

Congratulations. A 1941 Mosin-Nagant rifle almost surely saw action in WWII; the Soviets were always chronically short of firearms, not very many of them sat out the war. You have probably bought an outstanding "factory" refurbished, high-power rifle without breaking the bank.

I hope you enjoy this rifle as much as I enjoy mine.

Aren't the '41's more scarce? That's what I was told by someone a few days ago.

It depends on what kind of 41 it is. The 41 Tulas are not found too often. A 41 M39 is not rare. :D

Thanks guys!!! I really can't wait to get it cleaned up so I can identify it better and get some pics of it. And of course to shoot a few rounds with it.

1941 Izhevsk is common, 1941 Tula would not be, either way sounds nice :)

OK BuckeySgt, just for your post I cleaned enough to see that it has the Izhevsk arrow on it as well as a Russian crest. Several other stamps and marks as well but have not identified them yet. Checked and it does not appear to have had a scope. Going to do a super clean on Monday so I can get some good pics.

How can you check to see if it had a scope on it? I'd like to check mine as well. As far as cleaning I bought $5 bottle of Simple Green from Lowes and a simple aluminum $1 dollar pan from Dollar Tree, used up about 35-40% on the first clean, let it dry, used up another 35-45% on second time around. Wiped the stock and had it dry for about a day or so while all the dissasembled parts dried along side it as well and then put it back together. No cosmoline at all but it will dry out the metal so use some oil on the bolt and inside the chamber so it can go in smoothly. :)

But yeah how do I check to see if my MN 91/30 had a scope?

To check for ex snipers you open the bolt and look inside the reciever on the left side for plugs. :D

Izhevsk all right, something must have changed, all the refurbs I used to buy came in with next to no grease on them no matter who I bought it from. Lately I see some refurbs that look like they were packed in a Turkish arsenal, slathered with grease.
