Is MFS 7.62x54R ammo reloadable?
Is MFS 7.62x54R ammo reloadable?
Just wondering, I bought about 5 boxes of the stuff since it was on sale so I will have 100 empty cases. If so I might pick up one of the Lee reloading kits ect and start reloading them to save a little money.

If it is steel case then no it isn't reloadable. you need to get some prvi partisan or winchester white box or sellier & Bellot or wolf gold. These are the only ones i know that are brass cased and reloadable. Maybe some old norma too.

Norma is re-loadable (in that is has Boxer primed Brass cases)
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

Worth it for the brass as long as it's not corroded inside or out.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

I suggest Prvi, its cheaper and the rim is correct.

Eddy can you explain what you mean? I am not familiar with rim differences, but that sounds important.Eddystone06 wrote:I suggest Prvi, its cheaper and the rim is correct.

He might have been talking about 303 British, there is a difference between American made 303 Brass and European brass as far as the rim thickness goes in 303,it will affect head space to some degree depending on how you prep new brass or handle once fired cases.
As far as 54r goes never had any issues with any brass or steel case ammo. Prvi Partizan and S & B will be your cheapest commercial ammo,Prvi make the Wolf Gold line of ammo and S & B make the Winchester 54r ammo and preprimed brass. Finding any reloadable brass other than Lapua or Norma at the moment is about impossible so most people just buy one of the above shoot it and reload it.

actually, any rimmed cartridge headspaces differently than non-rimmed. In my and the the ventures of many others it is known that domestic made brass suffers from "thin rim" and / or "soft rim" American brass has a thin rim which alters headspace and brass life and it also suffers from soft rim which is the rim is softer than it should be and will smash or deform which also alters headspace. both of these issues affect detail accuracy. Both of these issues can be catastrophic in rifles with looser than suggested headspace. PRVI keeps their brass in exact spec to the actual design of the round.res45 wrote:He might have been talking about 303 British, there is a difference between American made 303 Brass and European brass as far as the rim thickness goes in 303,it will affect head space to some degree depending on how you prep new brass or handle once fired cases.

That is interesting, and would explain why I have read that a rifle that fails a no-go headspace guage test but passes a field headspace guage test is considered safe to only fire factory loaded ammunition, but not reloaded ammunition.

I do have brass and bullets for this caliber but have not reloaded as yet. I'm waiting to run through the couple thousand surplus rounds that I bought and with it remaining so cheap, I may never reload.

I do the same thing, I reload when I get down to a few hundred rounds and can't resupply, next it's .303 brit.

Boxer primed is easily reloadable but Berdan is harder

Just about impossible for most American reloaders who lack the proper gear, and then there is the expense and rarity of the Berdan primers .

Re: Is MFS 7.62x54R ammo reloadable?
So based on the type of primer in the the 7.62 X 54R it could be a waste of money to buy reloading dies????I have two boxes of the PPU which is the privi and the cases are brass since I checked them with a magnet... Cost for 20 150 grain soft points was $17.99 which is not bad..I guess I should return to that gun shop and buy some more of the PPU brand... what kind of primer does the privi or PPU take? Boxer or Berdan?
Re: Is MFS 7.62x54R ammo reloadable?
Prvi partisan is making boxer primed ammo in brass for the us so they can be reloaded. There are a few others like wolf gold, sellier and bellot and winchester.
