Well just an update the gunsmith has had my gun for over a month and all he has been able to tell me is that, there is a big variation in the shoulder length of my ammo (which I knew just from looking at the rounds). He asked if any were reloads and I told him no. All were surplus or BNIB. He said there is no cosmoline in it at all. so thats not causing the issue. Supposidly he was going to get back with me this week.... but haven't heard anything. Once again... I'm starting to think This was a waste of time. he spent a Month just to figure out what I did on here weeks ago. He did say after trying several different brands of ammo he found that Tul Ammo will cycle fine in it EVERY time. Which is Fine I guess as long as I can shoot it.... I'll keep the surplus stuff for the 91/30. Although I really don't think ammo brand should matter.

And to top it off he has the Bolt from my 91/30 and my snap caps so I can't even test my 91/30 to see if its fixed. If I don't here anything by Mid week, I'm gonna go pick it up on the weekend and just say the hell with it.

PS this seems to be the same issue I'm having but with Surplus and BNIB ammo.

SUCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the gunsmith thinks he found the issue. all thanks to a headspace check.... if he puts the guage in 1 way it says 1 think if he turns it it says another...

inspection with a bore light then found a small peace of brass from a shell prity much welded to the side of the chaimber. I'm waiting on him to get the chaimber reamer and i should be good to go....

Crossing fingers. :)

according to him its so small and in such a strange spot its almost impossable to see.

AWESOME!

Man, you stayed at it and did everything but turn the barrel inside out, good job. I am extremely anxious to hear your range report! My offer still stands if there is any more trouble.

Good job and good luck!

Very good to hear. Someone else here on the boards had that same problem and eventually found it, after many naughty words.

I am having same kind of problem with a bent bolt m9130 I just got. I haven't worked on it yet but JYD had some helpful info. I m going to try other bolts and see my gunsmith If he can help. I will let you know what happens. I know this isn't much help but I wanted to offer moral support and I will share all that I find out . I have 5 other bolts I can try out at the gunsmith shopthat he said to bring this week as soon as I can get the time to go. Good luck helps on the way, These guys on the forum won't let you down so keep the faith.JGC

LOL. Thanks for all the support guys. Once I get the m38 back I'm going to have to start all over with the 91/30 I got. But I think I got all the parts I'm going to need to fix that one.

Funny thing was last weekend my dad was at the range and there was someone there with an M44. Dad was so impressed with it they started talking and now he wants to buy one. LOL.

You may be a Mosin Nagant collector if..... you dismiss money and consider Mosin's as currency :chuckles:

SO i got the M38 back on friday, and After being super excited to see it cycle several rounds with no issues I'm now SUPER PISSED at the GUNSMITH.

More for the Movie!!!!

So I noticed that the bolt looks alot cleaner then when I sent it in (thought he polised it up for me), then I noticed that the one on the M38 was the "spare bolt" from my 91/30 that I had included as a "test" bolt to show that both bolts did the same thing. Called him up and he said he adjusted the headspace on that bolt to allow it to cycle correctly in my M38, which now worries me if I put it in the 91/30. Additionally now the M38 bolt still wont close on rounds... So he just forced me to use the wrong bolt from my rifle or I'm right back to square 1. I think he assumed the ugly one was the spare and didn't even bother check the numbers.

Can I just swap the bolt heads over so that I can keep the numbers matching aspect of it? I'm not worried about the 91/30 as much as its 99% of the time going to be a wall hanger. And if it needs work I'm not as stressed about restoring it to working order. Its just a 91/30 nothing special.

LIKE I SAID IN THE FIRST FEW POSTS, GUNSMITHS IN MY AREA SUCK BIG ONES.

On the bright side At least I can go shoot it now.
