I wish SOG still had the $150 No.4 Enfields. They were in rough shape but helped me rebuild quite a few sported and incomplete rifles. Funny, I never thought the M44 would've sold out. Sucks that the 91/30s will too someday dry up from the top retailers and some day you'll see 91/30 refurbs on GB with bids pushing $300. they should be running low by now because when the first stock of M44s ran out there was a few smaller shipments that came in and poof they were gone. SOG's current lot of them must have been a buy out of a lot already here maybe even one of the smart guys who bought them by the pellets when the were under $50 a piece. There was a guy maybe 10 years ago who bought a trailer full of 91/30 crates and I bet he is just patiently awaiting the drought.

I called them about a month ago to inquire about the M44's because the price looked really good. The lady told me that all of them are counter-bored. I'm trying to hold out to see if I can find one that hasn't been counter-bored. We'll see what the up coming gun show has...

 Of ALL of my Mosins, the best shooter is counterbored. 2" groups at 100 yrds. I'll take all of them.

All of my carbines (two M44 and one M38) are counterbored. I have four M91/30 rifles and none of them are counterbored.

I honestly do not pay any attention to counterbore. I have no idea how many are or are not. :D

I do but I don't care if it is counterbored or not... As long as the crown is clean & causes no issue I'm cool with it.

I wonder if they are still doing the $50 Hex handpick.

SOG M44's?

Mine was counterbored. Doesn't bother me and it shoots great. My 91-30s are not CBd so I use then for more accurate shooting. I use my m44 for fun really.

better to have a counterbore than have a rifle that needs one but didn't get it if it's a shooter you want anyway.

I got a Izhevsk M44 with matching numbers from SOG recently .The furniture is excellent ,the bore is clean and semi -shiny with good rifling bit the crown appears larger than the two chinese T53 that I compared it to..0.585 at the exterior bore size is what Mr. Lapin says is for the 1891 infantry Rifle.I don't have a micrometer to check the M44 but when I place a bullet into the crown of the T53 and then the m44 I can easily see the m44 is larger and the barrel is thinner. I have not taken them to the range yet . Do I have a problem of a worn out m44 crown. What can I do if that is the case? Thanks for any help. :D Rick AKA JGC P.S. I hope this is the correct Forum for this type Question. If not please straighten me out.

Nice M44 :) Sounds like it may have a bit more crown wear that some others, normal, these were cleaned from the muzzle with steel cleaning rods. You will just have to range test it and see what happens.

Mine was counterbored. I think there was a post stating that all the SOG M44's were counterbored.

Mine slugged decently (normal for the Mosin). 0.302 / 0.312.

Thanks jderimig, is there a way to determine if mine was counter bored? Can you remember any more about the counter bore posting. I guess I need to take off for the woods with some ammo and see what I have . Thanks again JGC. I'll save the targets for future comparison. Need to start doing that with all my guns and label the ammo too!
