Spent cartridges have a bent rim. Normal?

Post by BrianTSmith99 »

Hey!

Newbie question... I shot my Yugo SKS yesterday, and brought one of the spent cases home to sit on my desk to look at. :) So I LOOKED at it and the thing has a bend where the bullet was. So it is kind of "D" shaped with the flat part being about 0.3 inches. Is that a common thing? "Nature of the beast"? Or something bad?

I got a "No Go" headspace gauge and it passed that. I guess this may be a different question, but has been knocking around in my head... Should I try a "Go" gauge also? I got Go/NoGo/Field for the Mosins, but the SKS were pricier and then they come in American and European and the more I read the more confused I got. Any thoughts on which gauges to get?

Thanks guys!

Pretty much all of my semi auto's beat the hell out of brass, I know my Chinese SKS dented up a few.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

The dent on the casing neck is perfectly normal. Nearly half of all the thousands of SKS rounds that I have fired will have a dent the neck. Some guns/rounds do it more than others.
No words of wisdom come to mind at this time....

Worst offender I have is the Hakim, closely followed by the Garand. Beats the hell out of the brass, I found out the Garand ( one of them) was tossing it so hard that they were bouncing off a rock nearby and denting themselves that way.

I hope you didn't burn the poor guy, or make him yell and send his rounds into the next guys target :)

I had a H&K 91 with a fluted chamber. That thing ripped them out , dinged the brass on the ejection port and then threw them every where. the ones you could find could be reloaded about 1/2 the time. Theother half was just too tore up.
Damn, I'll bet that's going to leave a mark! Probably hurt too!

I remember that about the H&K 91, it was a popular semi auto in the 90's, friend had one, half the time I couldn't even find the brass.

Lucky you didn't bust the extractor and crack the bolt.
