Impressions on Czech low recoil ammo.

Post by Sgt. Rob »

Took Wyatt and my eldest boy (Kenny) out to the gully beside the house today and burned up 48 rds of the Czech low recoil ammo. Recoil was practically nil, but it is loud and even from a 91/30 made an impressive fire ball. We only shot Wyats '40 Tula and only at @ 20yds. However, Kenny and I shot overlapping groups of 3 on a target that were centered at that distance and slightly low from point of aim. The combined 6 shot group, fired off hand, measured approx. 2-1/4 inches. Most of the rounds fed and extracted smoothly, yet twice we experianced "sticky" bolt. I think it may be the shellaced cases, and at that possibly ones that were maybe a little thick in the shellac part. Wyatt had a literal blast being able to shoot his own Mosin, and I think Kenny is now hooked. We just finished cleaning the rifle, and I will say this stuff makes alot of "black" fouling, but cleans out quickly enough with the standard Mosin cleaning procedure.

The end results are, that after talking to the Wife, I got permision to order another 108 rds ( and I threw in some 174gr Silver Bear to try in the "faux sniper", but we got to keep mum on that part) and seeing how much fun Kenny had I gave him my 1941 Izhevesk, and to my middle boy I gave my 1942 Izhevsk. Both think Dad is crazy for giving away two rifles, but they are my boys and it was good to see a spark of intrest in them again about shooting. Now they want to go to the range and shoot real ammo! :D In their rifles. I can always get more anyway.

Sorry I do not have pics, forgot the camera on the counter today, but here is an older pic of Wyatts '40 Tula.............

I had some of that stuff and on a lark shot it at my FIL's rimfire targets. I figured I wouldn't hit them, so no harm. Later I went and looked, and there was 5 neat round holes right through the 1/4 inch swingers he had up for .22s. I forget which Mosin I was shooting, but they were dead on at 50 yards.

It is fun, even with gallery loads, I bet they can't wait until they can shoot the full loads. Start stockpiling ammo so they will have some to shoot once they are ready, in a few years the surplus may be gone.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.

Upon further reflection, I wasn't shooting the gallery loads. I had some of those 125 gr practice loads, that I think were East German. I don't think the Czech gallery loads would penetrate steel.

The older boys are and have been shooting for some time, they are 17 and 15 years old. From about 13 to just about now both of them have been far more focused on Girls, sports, Girls, cars, Girls, youth group, Girls, school, Girls................ Did I mention Girls??? Its only just lately that the older two are starting to want to shoot again. So after yesterday when Kenny was getting excited and Trevor came down towards the end and started getting into it, well I want to focus mostly on Tula anyway, so I gave'em the Izhevsk's and were going to the range proper next week. I still have to compete with Girls, but if I can activate the shooting intrest again I'll be pleased.

I will be squirreling away alot more ammo.

millman, I am not sure just how much power these Czech rounds have. There are conflicting reports around the net. But at @20 yards they had no trouble penetrating 2 liter soda bottles full of water. I plan on taking some to the range and seeing how much drop in trajectory they have out to 250yds next week. Might even come up with something a little tougher to shoot at as well, then water in a bottle.
