Finnish M39 markings

Post by skeet1 »

Last night i had my 1944 VKT m39 apart and noticed on the underside on the barrel chamber area and the forward part under the receiver ring is what appears to be some kind of serial number. This a boldly stamped four digit number and is stamped perpendicular to the barrel and receiver on both parts. They do not match the serial number on the top of the barrel or on the bolt knob. Can anyone tell me what these numbers are? :?:

I believe someone said it was a batch number or something like that. Can't remember but it was discussed earlier in one of the M39 posts. :D

Assembly number, keeps the parts together before final serial number stamping.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Look on the sides of the recoil lug on the receiver and most times there will be matching numbers. Like the Dog said they were Finnish assembly numbers. Most anything else under there are inspection marks showing the rifle went through some now unknown step or process of assembly. Fun to look at but of little or no known meanings anymore. Bill
