AK-47 scope

Post by son of a gun »

Hey, We picked up a romanian wasr 10-63 the other day. All was fine, but this looked intresting so I thought I'd make a topic. He said it was an AK scope mount (on left side). I don't plan on putting any scope on it, but has anyone seen this before? - thanks!

I've seen it on the net, but not in person. I didn't know WASR's had these. Mine doesn't.

This is what they look like. They are called a LPS 4x6 TIP2 scope. I took this one off of my Romanian PSL when I sold it and put it on my WASR. There's also supposed to be a rubber eye cup/eye relief on the end, but I can't seem to find mine.

To be honest, I haven't taken her out and re-sighted the scope in. When it was on my PSL, I was getting 2-3 MOA. Here's what the reticle looks like on these. The numbers on left are range finding. Very neat scopes and they are only about $100-120.

My local gun shop has one of these scopes and the mount for $125. It is also off a PSL. He also has one on a AK and says it shoots good. :D

I have seen these on-line for $99.00 for scope and mount. The only thing that has held me back is that the add says it fits "some" AK side rails.
My AK is a WASR-1, and I would not be knowing if it would be a fit or not.

Des, see if he'll go $100 and I'll buy it! The one I have is a little beat up aesthetically. I should have bought 20 of these things a year ago when they were $89.

Yeah, that is the trick and not all rails will work. The only ones that do are ones that have a slot or opening in the rail, about halfway along the rail. The RomakIII/PSL Tip2 scopes have a "nubbin" on them on the underside of the mount that makes it impossible to slide onto certain side rails, without dremelling that nubbin off. I was going to do that to this one, then realized I have the correct rail on my AK. Normally, when you place one of these side rail scopes on, you start at the very end of the rail and slide them along the rail until the stop. With a "notched" AK rail, you can start halfway onto the rail and the scope slides on from there. (If this makes sense).

I will go see if he still has it Jeff. He is only open 3 days a week though and even then opens at 4pm. I will have to wait for payday though. There is a possibility he will go for it though. :D

Well, I haven't seen them for under $100 in a long time, so...Centerfire Systems used to have them pretty cheap, but that was without the rubber boots. If he'll go for it, I can just send you cash, plus a finders fee, of course. I don't want you using your own money for this, but I appreciate it! Just see if it looks like it's in better shape than the one I have. Mine is all scratched up. I may tape this one off and paint the whole thing black.

I will go check Jeff. No finders fee neccessary as i go there a few times a month. I have looked at it and tryed to see if it would fit a saiga 308 and it wouldn't. I don't think it is too scratched up. :D

My WASR has one on it and I have seen different adapters with quick release and without. I don't know which is best.I've also heard AK's just are not accurate enough to need optics except in low light situations. JGC

I guess I like having an optic that I could use for quick distance, elevation and windage adjustments and the TIP2 will do that. Now, what I don't know, is how well it will work with the 7.62x39 round vs the 7.62x54r, which is what it is designed to be used with. Once the weather gets a little better out here in the PacWest, I plan on finding out.

Drago, really good point! Have switched some since 1994.You can adjust these for a X39 at 100 yds, But, forget the reticle for range finding if the scope was cammed for X54. They are NOT the same. These scopes are cammed for a certain caliber AND so is the reticle. They will work, but not for the longer range of a X54. Now, Kalinka sells the PSOP and says they will at any range. I have POSP scopes and they flat do not. If you put one on a x39, the correlation of adjustments and reticle is just not the same at all. The older and cheaper scopes are the hardest to work with if you want a good scope. Best to go with a standard commercial with a good
side mount.

OO, since I wasn't certain what would happen ranging with my LPS scope, which are also referred to as a PSO-1, PSOP or TIP-2 scope (confused everyone?)...I decided to look up some things. Apparently, these scopes are range calibrated for the same MOA, so they will work on both calibers. That's at least according to this website.

http://www.rusmilitary.com/html/rifle_scopes.htm

I'm not going to say it isn't true, but I honestly don't see how. I've also read that the reticle is for both calibers, but the turrets are not. Then I read here (http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_4_56/13741 ... 2x39_.html) both ideas.

Only a trip to the range will prove to me one way or another.

They are all promoting something. Tell ya what. Sight in on the 100. Then try using the range finder reticle for 300. X54 will work. x39 will not.
the x54 caliber and the x39 are not cammed nor reticle etched identical. A truly honest importer can affirm this. At least some did years ago.
But, my 1993 POSP modified to fit the Yugo M76 side rail shot dead on at 800 yards with my .308 reloads matched to X54 ballistics. Even for a sleeping
coyote on the mid-section fence line or snow bank. Probably only 2 of 5 tries, but very impressive to me.

Is this not the same scope and mount that is in J&G's ad in Shotgun News for $99.95 or two for $89.99?

Can not say. Do not have shotgun news. Cannot find any on J&G site. Sounds way far to cheap to be Russian Military to me.
