The commerce which maybe carried on with the people inhabiting the line you will pursue renders a knowledge of these people important ~Thomas Jefferson~ (to- Lewis and Clark)
It's a jump rope, this way you can stay in shape while you clean your carbine
I believe it's a type of bore snake, but I'm only speculating. My Russian didn't come with one nor have I seen one before. I think I've seen them on Ebay though.
It's for cleaning the bore, you drop the weight down the bore and pull the rest along, field cleaning tool. Common, we had them, the Brits did also.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell, English novelist, essayist, and critic, 1903-1950
Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.
are you all sure ? i have used a patch tied to a string to clean pistols and shotguns before , but mine looks unused and the weights appear to big to fit down the bore , anyone care to demonstrate

It's a crude tool used to clean the rifle in the field during a prolonged absence from any encampment. You are supposed to use it for a display, not use it for cleaning

The British ones are fairly good, at one time they sold for .25 each, but now they may be getting hard to find. You know what the German ones look like I am sure, never use them, metal to metal contact is bad enough with the issue steel cleaning rods.
