Hi guys. Bought this SKS at a gun show this weekend. 275 out the door. I think it's a Yugo. What do you guys think about it? Looks to have matching numbers and it's pretty original aside from the flash suppressor.
thanks!
John

You will have a lot of fun with that Carbine. They are really nice ones to shoot. It is a California modified rifle. That's why it has
the flash hider instead of the original grenade launcher on it. Probably from what is it? Big 5 out there sounds familiar.
It will last you a life time if you just clean it properly. Especially clean the gas valve and gas tube. Congrats on a nice choice!
Yessirry, A nice one from Big 5 as noted by that old guy that is an outlaw. I am not sure why the need to outlaw the grenade launcher, I think people are more likely to use the bullets then the grenades that aren't available anyway.

They still sell them. I think it is for $499 and they regularly go for $399 on sale. Sorry was wrestling with a bad behaving puppy for a bit there.

So the gun fires great but it fails to feed the next round about 90% of the time so I have to open it up and then the casing will pop out. I took the gun apart and cleaned it and maybe that will solve the problem. However I'm not sure because I can't test it between trips to the range and they are not that often. So I took some pics and wanted to see if anything looks out of the ordinary.
A little bit of pitting on the head. Of this guy but very minor:
Nice SKS, Don't these rifles have a feature that blocks the gas port so the grenade launcher can be used? Could be a partial obstruction in the gas system.
Leave it as it is. The ages have been at work on it and man can only mar it.

Failure to eject could be one of two common things, a dirty chamber (some lacquer buildup) or the gas selector valve not sealing good. There are different ways to fix the gas leak, some use a paper clip to seal it or use a replacement valve that fits slightly tighter. The port that runs from the barrel thru the gas selector to the tube could possibly be plugged(dried hardened cosmo). The gas piston from what I can see looks fine.
Was there any carbon build up between the gas tube and the gas selector block, does that area fit together tightly?
Mine acted like that once, I had left the gas selector in the wrong position
I said I was an addict. I didn't say I had a problem.
Everybody has done that at least twice, did it on the FAl first time I sghot it, forgot I had closed it in prep to adjust the gas flow by opening it one click at a time.

Just be certain the gas valve selector is fully over in the right hand position. Just like it was on your first pic set. Some times these need a hard finger push to get
them locked in the far right position. If it is not fully locked in, this will happen.
One more thing, on that recoil spring assembly, that squiggly end goes inside of the bolt carrier. If you get it in backwards, it usually will not eject or feed correctly on many SKS.

Sounds like your gas valve is moved over to the wrong side or its just worn out, these like to wear prematurely if they are not cleaned. Someone was making stainless steel replacements and I heard very good things about them. Gonna have to do a google search.
Well I disassembled and gave her a good cleaning/ still not ejecting, it is not opening far enough/sliding back far enough upon firing and the shell can't make it out because the window is too small. What do you guys think? Gas valve not sealed well?

YEP ! THE ALL FAMOUS STOVE PIPE. You can wrap a white piece of cloth or t-shirt around the gas valve area & shoot it to see if & where its leaking & how badly by the amount of burnt gun powder it leaks on the rag. Id almost bet youll resolve your problem.
here is murray's link to a enlarged aftermarket gas valve.

What kind of ammo are you using ?. If your usung black box tula ammo, that could be your problem. I have read other threads were others were using this ammo and having the same problems your having because the ammo was loaded to weak for the rifle to properly function. Try a different ammo and see if that fixes the problem.
I won`t be wronged. I won`t be insulted. I won`t be laid a hand on. I don`t do these things to other people, and I require the same from them.

My gas system has never failed, worked even when it shouldn't , just ask the spousal unit.
Very nice Yugo, enjoy it. Wish I would have got a couple when I first got my C&R and they were like $179-199.
If at first you don't succeed, reload and try again.
